If Linton, Indiana, sounds familiar to you, it might be from the movie Hoosiers. Linton was one of the towns that played against Hickory High. Linton is small but it has proven time and time again that size doesn't matter, as a number of people from Linton have gone on to great things. Friendly people, hard work and a thriving community are proof that great things come in small packages.
If you have never lived in a small town before then you are in for a real treat! Home rentals here are easy to find and even easier to grab. While in a few cases you might have to fill out an application or undergo a credit check, most home rentals are handshake deals. You sign a lease, hand over first and last month's rent along with a security deposit and you get the key. Pet deposits are rare and usually covered under the security deposit. You will need deposits for the utilities, and it's a good idea to take a copy of your lease with you to the water company; depending on who's working the desk you will be asked for the lease.
Historically, there are plenty of home vacancies so planning early for your move isn't strictly necessary. Try to avoid moving here in February because it can be cold and icy for a few weeks. Mid-August is not a great moving time either due to the heat and humidity. September and October are the best months -- the fall colors will beautifully welcome you to your new home.
Like most small towns, Linton has expanded slowly and eventually it ran into the next, even smaller, town. There are no real neighborhoods, but Hoosiers can be stubborn with their tiny towns, so the designations often remain.
Linton Proper: This is the original area that made up Linton Township. You will find the town center, the business district and all of the shopping areas here. As is true with most towns of this size, there is a good mix of smaller single family homes with 3 to 4 bedrooms mixed in with larger homes that once held the movers and shakers of the town. These homes are large, and 6 bedrooms or more are not unusual. If you are looking for something smaller, like a one-bedroom rental apartment, this area might not be the best match for you.
Switz City: As the story goes, way back in the day, two branches of a very large family from Switzerland settled in this area. They made their fortune in coal mining and then within a few years all of them had moved farther west. However, the name stuck and remains to this day. This area is primarily residential these days, but there is a consolidated school district serving students that are too far for either the Linton or Bloomfield districts. The homes here run from small 1 bedroom apartments to 4-5 bedroom single family homes. There are a few duplexes here as well and they average 2-3 bedrooms. You will find Switz City as you head out of Linton towards Bloomfield. Blink and you might miss it. There is a stop sign by the Old Dairy Queen; when you get there you're in the heart of this tiny village.
Linton Main: If you are looking for a small apartment complex or one to two-bedroom apartments, then this is the best area to look. You will find a few local amenities here such as fast food chains and chain grocery stores scattered around.
This is great small town living but for excitement, you will probably head to Bloomington or Indianapolis. There are a few things that Linton actually does better than everyone else, and top on this list is the yearly Freedom Festival for the 4th of July. This features the largest parade in Indiana and more than 40,000 people attend it each year.
