Blackfoot is not only known as the "Potato Capital of the World," but it is also home to the Eastern Idaho State Fair, an exciting annual tradition, celebrated for over 112 years! Blackfoot is a powerful and fascinating little city and sits at the county seat as the principal city for the region. With a roaring local economy that rivals Pocatello, North East Jefferson, Colorado, and others around the block, it's little wonder people are checking into the area for long-term stays!
Three of the best reasons "transplanters" dig this region is its hearty community support, easy commute life and high quality living that includes affordable housing. Rental homes in Blackfoot require at least a month's security deposit, so start looking around early. A month is a good time to give yourself for the best leasing option, and bear in mind an application fee is often included in most of the leasing processes.
Blackfoot's immediate communities are just to its north, south and east. Three communities are categorized here that vary according to WalkScore and housing accommodation.
Poplar Street: A pleasant, very walkable small community, north of the city. It takes only six minutes to get to the heart of Blackfoot walking, and only one minute by car. With a WalkScore of 72, residents stroll to most places in the neighborhood--to shops, restaurants and schools in the area. Homes on Poplar Street are traditional ranch and colonial types with large land spaces; to find apartment homes in this area might take more effort than in other neighborhoods.
E. Alice Street: A cozy little community, east of Blackfoot. A walk along N. Broadway Street and W. Alice Street will take nine minutes on this half-a-mile stretch or three minutes by car. E. Alice Street is a friendly community in a less walkable area than Poplar Street; however, convenience stores and local eateries are still accessible on foot. There is a Family Eye Care around the bend that serves the area, and a Rupe's Burger joint only a block away. Idaho Potato Museum is also just five minutes away. To find rental apartments and homes in this area will take some advanced digging around.
S. Shilling Avenue: Definitely a car-dependent residential area, south of Blackfoot. This community has a WalkScore of 43 out of 100, which means shopping, dining and getting to work require a car. The good part is that no long commute is needed; it takes only four minutes on a minor road (South Shilling Avenue) to get you into the main city. You may not find all bills paid apartments in this area, but rental properties are around for those needing temporary occupancy.
Blackfoot may remind of you a Midwestern farming town with an appreciable dose of Mother Nature's rustic side decorating residential communities. Bursting with "Old World" charm and assurance, it's much smaller than other neighboring towns, but this sets up the atmosphere for random chats at the drug store, farmer's market or restaurants, where everyone "knows everybody" though not in the literal sense.
Recreation: The Jensen Grove Park, Jensen Lake and Airport Park offer residents the gamut of activities to bike, canoe, hike and host special events whenever "time-out" is needed. Of course, every year you are guaranteed several festivals and special programs to entice the entire community; one is the Eastern Idaho State Fair, which takes a special seat.
Transportationis no hassle. Residents walk almost everywhere: to the department stores, service stations and barber shops. With a WalkScore that's 78 starting on North Broadway Street, you are bound to save nicely on your car's gas mileage. Plus, for a hasty getaway, the Pocatello Regional Airport is less than five minutes away!
