Located in north central Texas, just southeast of Hubbard Creek Lake, the city of Breckenridge is home to 5,815 residents. Founded as Picketville in 1854, the county was organized in 1856 and named after a Senator from Kentucky. That Senator just happened to be the Vice President of the United States, John C. Breckinridge. The name was altered by a single vowel and has since been referred to as Breckenridge, Texas. The oil boom that boosted the town's economy beginning in the 1920's has since cooled, however the petroleum industry is still a major employer to this day. The crossroads of Hwy 180 and Hwy 183 meet in the center of town and provide a convenient thoroughfare that will take you north, east, south and west, depending on your destination.
Moving to Breckenridge
The best time of year to make your move into this charming little town would be from late September through early June. This timing isn't because of college populations moving in and out of town, although the Texas State Technical College is located in town. It has more to do with the weather and the heat. However, if the possibilities of tornadoes or the intense heat makes no difference to you, then any time of year will be just fine to plan your move.
What You Need
Remember to bring your checklist of must-haves and absolutely-not's with you on your search. If you call up a local real estate agent, the process will go twice as fast, but if you plan on sticking with Craigslist or the local paper for listings, remember to take your list so you can check off potential yes's versus the no's. You will also need to have your identification ready as well as your work and personal references. A credit check is typical, so you might want to take a peek ahead of time so you don't encounter any embarrassing surprises. Finally, you will need to have enough money in reserve to be ready to place your deposits and pay for application fees, which are also standard protocol if you plan on leasing from a community or complex.
Breckenridge's Neighborhoods
There are 3 constituent neighborhoods within the Breckenridge community. For the sake of expediency, we have provided a few details about each and what you will find there.
Crystal Falls/ Caddo: If you are looking to rent an apartment in Breckenridge but you prefer the rural, or what some would consider rather remote, location of Hubbard Creek Lake, then this is the ideal neighborhood for you! You will find small to medium sized (usually between 1 and 4 bedrooms) standalone homes and mobile homes out in this neighborhood, set amongst gorgeous Pines, Oaks, and Evergreens. This is country living at its finest!
W. Walker St./ N. Parks St.: If you want to begin your apartment search closer to town and where most of the action is happening, this is an area that is easy to fall in love with. Historically rich and architecturally well preserved, many of the apartments for rent were built between the 1940s on through the late 1960s. There are, of course, modern buildings that were constructed after the year 2000, but if you long for the style and class that was such a part of that era, you will have no problem finding a home that fits your personality in this part of town!
City Center: Located just east of the W. Walker and N. Parks neighborhood is the City Center. This is a neighborhood where you can easily find a studio for rent or a 3 bedroom apartment. It all depends on your needs. Grand Lake is in the northeastern corner of the neighborhood and is a favorite watering hole for the residents on the weekends. Prices in this area are also a bit easier on the bank balance than the Crystal Falls and Caddo area, so if you are a city dweller, this will please you to no end!
Living in Breckenridge
Life in Breckenridge is usually simple but never boring! The Breckenridge Fine Arts Center is a place the locals enjoy and participate, artistically speaking, when exhibitions and public events are held. For the best BBQ in town, follow your nose to S. Breckenridge Ave. to the Pit Stop Bar-B-Q for the most amazing pulled pork sandwich you've ever had the good fortune of sinking your teeth into! Food and arts aside, by far, the most popular pastime is fishing at Hubbard Creek Lake. Largemouth Bass, White Bass, Freshwater Drum, and Blue Catfish dominate the lake... so if you are an angler, you've just met your hunting grounds!
