National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states
Apartment List has released Asheville’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters nationwide, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the country’s 111 million renters.
"Asheville renters expressed general satisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "However, ratings varied greatly across different categories, indicating that even though renters love Asheville, some aspects can be better."
Key Findings in Asheville include the following:

Asheville's creative pulse beats strongest here, where the River Arts District's 200+ studios occupy converted industrial buildings. Renters appreciate monthly gallery crawls but face limited late-night dining beyond 9PM. The neighborhood's converted lofts attract artists seeking high ceilings over modern appliances.
Oakley embodies Asheville's artistic spirit with its mix of craftsman bungalows and converted barns housing pottery studios. Residents enjoy easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway for weekend hiking while maintaining proximity to downtown music venues. The neighborhood's Oakley Farmers Market provides mid-week produce from local farms, though the railroad tracks create occasional noise disruptions. Craft beverage enthusiasts appreciate the walkable breweries and meaderies that host frequent community events.
Artistic energy defines Downtown Asheville, where historic buildings house distinctive apartments above nationally-acclaimed restaurants and galleries. The walkable district surrounds Pack Square with its regular festivals and community events, while nearby microbreweries and performance venues create built-in entertainment beyond your apartment walls. Though tourist presence increases during weekends and peak seasons, the authentic community connections through independent businesses and cultural initiatives create distinctive living experiences beyond typical rental situations.
