Chrisman Street is an important stop in the Mississippi Blues Trail. Cleveland has long been a hub for Mississippi Blues, and life here beats to those immortal tunes.
W.C. Handy, a legendary blues musician, stated he experienced an enlightenment on what blues music actually was during his trip to Cleveland. And you can too. Home to 12,334 people, Cleveland still jams to the blues. This Delta town boasts more than just great arts and music, though. With a lively downtown scene and great food, it's a cool land to just L-I-V-E.
Moving to Cleveland
Easy Renting
Rejoice, and sing the blues! A rental-occupancy rate of over 50% means nabbing a home for rent will be as easy as floating down the Mississippi River.
Houses Are Your Friend
With nearly 73% of homes being detached houses, it's obvious that searching for rental houses will yield you the most success. That's not to say you have no other choices. There are some apartment homes in Cleveland; for instance, the Colony Apartments property features one and two-bedroom apartments for rent.
Time Ain't a Thing
You can locate available rental housing any time. Allow 15 to 25 days for the whole process. Searching in fall or spring is advised as the weather is best then. Summers down here are scorchers! Unless you have to or really enjoy smacking mosquitoes around, don't home hunt in the summer.
Quality Is Important
With over 27% of the homes built before 1960, you are advised to check your pad for issues, even if it's somewhat new. You don't want to be subject to using outdated appliances or dangerous electrical wiring. Or else you'll be singing the sad kind of blues.
Preparation Is Necessary
You must fork out a month's rent and the deposit to move into to your Cleveland pad. Don't be shocked if the landlord or management company wants a credit report, evidence you can afford the place, and some references.
Cleveland Neighborhoods
Life varies throughout Cleveland's 7.3 square miles. List your priorities first, and choose a neighborhood accordingly. A bad choice could leave you in a neighborhood you don't like.
Delta State University: The Bologna Performing Arts Center, Hey Joe's Record & Cafe, and Mosquito Burrito make this area a paradise for the arts, partying, and eating. You don't really need a car, since this is Cleveland's best neighborhood for biking and walking.
East Side: This area is mostly housing and living here requires a car, unless you are in super shape. Shady Grove Park adds a bit of beauty.
Cleveland Country Club: Delta State Golf Course and nice houses make this a pleasant part of town. The area is somewhat car dependent.
Living in Cleveland
On many days, the town seems most content relaxing in a rocking chair and conversing, but that can change in a flash as annual events like the Crosstie Arts and Jazz Festival, Oktoberfest, and the Delta Rice Tasting Luncheon bring culture and fun to the forefront. If you find yourself bumming around too much, stop by the famous Po' Monkey's Lounge and let true Delta blues music give you a shot of energy.
You can survive without a car, but a vehicle is convenient for getting around the greater region, and that's why many folks use one. With Memphis under two hours away, Cleveland in in close proximity to big city life if you want, but it also sizzles with a down-home southern feel. The combination of affordability, niche shopping, grocery stores, and chilled-out entertainment makes Cleveland a nice spot to live.
