Wilkes-Barre is a city of about 41,000 people in Luzerne County. Turn a circle downtown and you will find a near panoramic view of beautiful mountain ranges around you including the Poconos to the east and the Endless Mountains to the west. The Susquehanna River flows along the northwest border and a recent urban renewal plan has designated a “Diamond City Entertainment District,” replete with coffee shops, bistros, bookstores, theaters, movie cinemas, billiards halls and nightclubs. Attractions include the Wyoming Monument, Frederick Stegmaier Mansion and the Little Theater of Wilkes-Barre.
If you are searching for an apartment to rent, there are plenty of good choices these days that are safe and not terribly expensive. Studio apartments run about $450 and you can generally find one and two-bedrooms for $600 to $700 a month. Lease terms are quite flexible and features will typically include Internet, free cable, air conditioning, laundry and some utilities paid. Nicer apartment complexes will have swimming pools, hot tubs, fitness centers and playgrounds. These will cost $800 to $900 and ask for a deposit of about the same. They usually have more square feet and good security systems.
If you are in the market for a house for rent, options are a bit scarcer around here. That isn’t to say they aren’t out there but private homes for rent are tougher to come by than apartments. That said, the ones available have great features like basements, garages, backyards, patios, storage and enhanced privacy. Rent isn’t too bad either and you can often find a two-bedroom house for around $750 to $900. Another more plentiful option is townhomes. These will offer you more square feet—probably between 1000 and 1300—yet won’t be as difficult to find as houses for rent.
Wilkes-Barre has had some hard times but today it makes a good place to live and raise a family. Good luck with your housing search!
