Settled in 1786 by families seeking agricultural land and timber, the most impressive farm was named Castle Shanahan. The name eventually mutated to Castle Shannon. In 1872, the Pittsburgh and Castle Shannon Railroad line stimulated the town's growth by providing good transportation into Pittsburgh.
