Where and When to Look
It gets cold in the winter here, so you may prefer to search for rentals during another season. This is a four season town, with lovely falls and fresh springs, warm summers, and yes -- cold winters. Bring snow boots as well as swimsuits. Look for rental listings online, and be sure to spend time roaming the town itself. Yarmouth Town Center: This suburban density neighborhood connects to Cousins Island via a causeway. With medium-size to small single-family homes and a variety of apartment complexes available, this is a good place to find apartments or rental condos. Some properties here are historic, but most were built between 1970 and 1999. This community is located along the ocean coves and beaches.
Yarmouth Junction / Royal Junction: The Royal River runs through it, and I-295 offers easy access from this suburban neighborhood, which consists primarily of small to medium-sized single family homes and a variety of apartment complexes, most constructed from 1970 to 1999. Yarmouth Pointe Apartments and the Baywood Apartments may be options you should explore for places to live in Yarmouth.
You'll find plenty to do in Yarmouth, ranging from unique local shopping and dining to large scale festivals such as the Yarmouth Clam Festival, a three day event that has been taking placing in July since 1965. Clam shucking, a world class bike race, carnival rides, a parade, and arts and crafts are a cause to celebrate. Yarmouth is bisected by the waters of the Royal River. Cousins Island is a part of the downtown area, as are Lanes, Great, Littlejohn, and Little Moshier Islands. There are four beautiful waterfalls to explore in Yarmouth, too.
Historic homes such as the Silvanus Blanchard House, built in 1847, dot the community. Wooden plaques issued by the Yarmouth Historical Society are placed around the community, too. The Yarmouth History Center has a permanent interactive exhibit gallery that provides a fun look into Yarmouth's colorful past, and it offers open house tours every September. The town has an old fashioned, small town vibe that is particularly evident in a popular grocery and sundries shop, Andy's Handy, where kids of all ages tend to congregate. Sparhawk Mill, an old cotton mill on Bridge Street, now houses an eclectic collection of shops. Yarmouth was always a popular locale, with human inhabitants tracing from 2000 B.C. Settlers arrived in 1636 to find a fort already built on the site. Construction of the first saw mill at Royal River was soon followed by steady population growth, including descendants of the Plymouth Pilgrims.
