Algona has a history of welcoming newcomers. In 1894, the small town (4.51 square miles to be exact) -- along with Wesley and Dysart -- was integrated into the effort to assist the massive influx of orphans arriving in the US, as the result of booming levels of immigration. This project was widely known as the "Orphan Trains." The town of Algona welcomed nearly 100 orphans into its borders. Many of these orphans became lifelong residents, and it's easy to see why -- this place offers small-town living at its best, with a population of a little over 5,000 residents.
Moving to the area isn't hard. There are several local moving companies and drop offs for major moving truck rentals. This is convenient for those who don't want to incur extra mileage fees when having to turn in a moving truck to a more distant rental location.
Another thing to consider is tornadoes, which happen 179 percent more often here than in other areas. The locals will tell you they aren't to scary, so perhaps, you as well will soon learn to think of them as a minor weather nuisance.
