Check Building Permits Data In Your Market


The US Census Bureau publishes a robust dataset summarizing the number and valuation of new privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits. Authorization by permit is the first stage of the construction pipeline, and while not every permit will convert into a finished unit, permitting trends provide a forward-looking view of what construction levels should look like in 2-3 years. Use the interactive chart below to browse the data, nationally or in specific metropolitan areas. Here a "multifamily" unit is defined as a housing unit in a building containing 2 or more units. Approximately 90 percent of these units are in building containing 5 or more units.
