Brrrrr! So, you’re moving to Bangor, Maine? Be sure to pack your snow tires and down coats because Maine winters are pretty serious. We’re sure you’ve heard that a million times before, but hey, it never hurts to double check. Let’s check out some apartments for rent before we freeze to death.
Bangor is located in the central part of the state, north of the larger, more metropolitan (by Maine standards, anyway) Portland. When it comes to wildlife and wilderness, Maine is no joke and life in Bangor is no different. The city sits close to amazing parks and mountains, and is just a short drive away from the beach.
The city has a rich history that is well preserved in its 19th century architecture. Formerly a lumber economy, Bangor is the city that the famed Derry—the setting of many Stephen King novels and stories—is based on. We’re still on the fence about whether or not that’s totally awesome or kind of creepy, or both. On a more delicious note, it is also the birthplace of brownies.
There are few similarities beyond geography between Stephen King’s novels and real-life Bangor.
The type of rental you’re looking for will likely determine which Bangor neighborhood you’ll ultimately settle in. You’ll find mixed housing and developments in the city center and the surrounding neighborhoods. Many apartment rentals can be found in old historic buildings that can be quite drafty when temperatures drop below freezing (as they frequently do), but the innate Victorian charm will probably make up for that.
There are new apartment complexes, townhomes, rental homes and condominiums all located in the neighborhoods surrounding the city center. Some of these are fairly new and the apartments here reflect that with a price range from $700-$850 for a two bedroom. You can also occasionally find furnished apartments for rent in some of these locations.
Bangor is home to several institutes of higher education, and most of these college campuses haveattractive, quiet housing available for students and families alike. Many newer apartment buildings in these areas—particularly around Husson College to the northeast and Beal College to the southwest—will have studio apartments and short-term lease options available to fit any semester-centric need.
The farther north you go in Bangor, the more suburban and rural the neighborhoods will feel. There are also a lot of shopping centers to the north, so if you chose to relocate to this neighborhood you’ll be within a convenient distance to stores. Two bedrooms in this area go for $800-$1000.
Pet friendly apartments are fairly easy to come by in town. Some apartments may have limitations on the size or number of pets, or require an additional deposit, but overall you shouldn’t have too much trouble moving with your four-legged friends.
With that, welcome to Bangor, Maine! Bundle up and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Happy hunting! View Bangor City Guide
Balconies are a coveted amenity for many renters looking for high-rise views and opportunities for fresh air. However, you should keep in mind that balconies often come with restrictions.
Before signing a lease, ask about how many people can be on the balcony at once. Also, ask about whether you’re allowed to store a bike or other items.
You’ll also want to know about any maintenance schedules. Using your balcony as storage could result in fines and intervention from your property management.
Keep in mind that not all balconies are created equally. You may discover the views of the parking area are less than optimal or reduce your overall privacy.
Balconies can also get messy with debris, foliage, dirt, and pollen depending on your location. Renters are typically responsible for any clean-up and basic balcony upkeep.
Regardless of the issues to keep in mind, balconies are usually a big win for Bangor renters. Ask about apartments on higher floors for the best views.
