There are a total of eight Historical Sections of Norton, including the Cider Mill, Loyal Oak Tavern, and Norton Center Cemetery. That's a lot of history!
Norton Township was founded in 1818 as an incorporation of several villages and communities. A few decades later, the grist and sawmills were built, which brought jobs, money, and building materials into town. You know how to mill grist, right? Unfortunately, the people of Norton wanted their own, separate local government, but it took more than a century to accomplish. Norton was officially made its own village in 1961, and now more than 12,000 people live here.
Moving to Norton
See yourself sporting a country club membership and mingling with the sophisticates of Norton, Ohio? Best get your sewage and electricity hooked up then, or you'll make a poor first impression on your new friends!
Contact the City of Norton, and it'll set you up with running water and a trash-collection schedule. You can also ask the city for advice on electric and gas hookups, as well as cable and internet companies that work in the area. It saves a lot of calling around if you bother one government employee with all your questions. And why not? It's their job to help you!
Norton's WalkScore is 55, so you can get a few things done while out for a walk but it's still pretty important to have a car in your back pocket, so to speak. Particularly since there are no Amtrak stations around, anywhere.
As for rental condos and houses, you might have to bide your time with the realty listings, because they aren't particularly numerous. Before you hop in and sign a lease, make sure you've given the whole town a look and considered your choices. The difference between one-bedroom apartments for rent in Norton Center and a four-bedroom house in Barberton Brookside isn't something to overlook.
The Neighborhoods of Norton
The town is situated where Highways 224 and 21 intersect in both Summit and Wayne Counties. There are three basic neighborhoods: Johnson Road, Norton Center, and Barberton Brookside. Make sure to take a tour through each of these areas if you're new to Norton before you sign anywhere on the dotted line.
Johnson Road: This area in the southern section is probably the least populated of all. Adjacent to the Silver Creek Metro Park, this neighborhood contains a small residential section that is mostly at the edge of the park.
Norton Center: Just north of Lake Dorothy, spreading out to the east, lies Norton Center. Here you'll find the post office, the Norton Plaza Shopping Center and more residential zones that connect with bordering villages.
Barberton Brookside: This area gets its name from the Barberton Brookside Country Club. Apartment homes and rental homes are located near the club, with retail on the other side of Highway 224. This is arguably the most "sophisticated" part of town, so if you're a top hat and walking stick kind of guy, check out Barberton first.
Welcome to Your Life - Norton Style
Make no mistake about it, this is a rural town with all the cool, kitschy things that come with it. Take the annual Apple Cider Festival, for example, with its parade, fireworks, crafts, and local attractions. For a well-rounded schedule, you could join the Country Club and take up golf; check out the Magical Theater Company for a taste of the local arts.
Of course, you shouldn't overlook Lake Anna Park, a big green space with a beautifully round lake at the center. Feeling musical? Head over to the Frankie Spetich Orchestra for some lessons from the pros! If you aren't really that ambitious, check out the show schedule and sit back to watch. How many other little towns do you know of that have their own orchestra? Exactly.
Wondering what the food scene is like in your new favorite town? Picture it as heavy on the Italian, with a few interesting spices thrown into the mix. For pizza or pasta, hit up Angie's Italian Restaurant, Mr. Hero, or Christo's House of Pasta. When that becomes tiring, try out Wink's Drive-In for some country-fried steak or shredded BBQ chicken. Feeling adventurous? Belgrade Gardens, next stop!
There are plenty of corner cafes and local treats around Lake Anna, like the Coffee Pot and Casa Del Ranchero. Perhaps best of all is the Green Diamond Grill and Pub, home of the Lobster Fest. Just up the road is the Hiss Bakery -- the owner has an ironic love of cats, perhaps? -- where the freshly-baked treats are second to none.
Hungry yet? Get over here!
