You know you've become a Jersey native when mention of 'The Oranges' doesn't make you think of fruit. Instead, you know people are talking about the four Orange cities.
Making a move can be challenging, but South River, NJ has some very encouraging stats. Not only does New Jersey have the second highest per capita income in the U.S., but it also has an incredible number of places to rent. Home of the Giants, next door to the fashion capital of New York and full of top vacation spots, New Jersey is an incredible place to live. South River has a multitude of three-bedroom houses for rent and plenty of larger or smaller sizes to accommodate different space needs. The nearby Raritan Center hosts a never-ending stream of events, while plentiful shopping keeps locals busy all year long.
Moving to South River
Before finalizing the details of your move, keep in mind that South River is very rental friendly. Most people in this area rent their homes. Rental prices vary depending on the size and location of the apartment, but there are many reasonable one- to three-bedroom apartments. Be sure to have a couple of references from previous landlords and income verification. Many landlords like to hedge their bets and will perform a credit check in addition to this documentation. You might find private home rentals in South River less complicated, but when renting from a management company, this is standard.
Neighborhoods in South River
There are no bad areas to live in South River, but there is a range of prices depending on location. South River has three main neighborhoods, each with interesting local flavor and traditional hangouts.
Whitehead Avenue / Kamm Avenue: This area in the southernmost part of South River is the most expensive when it comes to buying real estate, but it also has the largest units available. Even though it is expensive for the U.S. as a whole, it still has some of the more reasonably priced rental homes in the state. The arts are well represented in this area, with the Ballroom Dream Dance Studio offering a variety of lessons.
Main Street / Ferry Street: Here are the most expensive rental units, in large part due to the plentiful water access. This area enjoys miles of riverbank along the South River, making watersports and fishing a part of daily life for many residents.
Borough Center: For smaller units, Borough Center is the best area to look. Most of the rental properties here are one- and two-bedroom apartments. Bissett's Recreation Area offers locals a great place to enjoy the outdoors, play on the water and rest and recharge at the end of a busy week.
South River Logistics
Living in South River has many benefits, not the least of which is the short commute times. Most people have a daily one-way commute of 15 minutes or less. That is well below the national average, and in many cases, locals walk or bike to work. Owning a car is still a good idea, particularly since the entire area tends to migrate down on the shore during the summers, but you might luck into a job that is well within comfortable walking distance.
