Heathcote is centered between Bunker Hill Environmental, Six Mile Run and Ireland Brook County Park. Nature's got a hold on you now!
Heathcote is a small, census-designated place in Middlesex County, New Jersey. This community is something of a far-outlying suburb to the city of New Brunswick - not to be confused with the Canadian province, which isn't really too far away, either. At the last census, there were just over 5,800 citizens in Heathcote, surrounded by numerous forested tracts, national parks and endless hiking and campgrounds. There are miles of dedicated bicycle trails in and around these parks and reserves, as well as many people who travel to the region to ride them. One thing's for sure - Heathcote is located in one of the freshest, airy regions in all of New Jersey!
Moving to Heathcote, NJ
Are you about to become Heathcote's newest citizen? Congratulations! There are just a couple of things you'll need to take care of before you take that monumental step over the threshold. That is, if you would prefer running water and stuff like that, of course.
Places for Rent in Heathcote
Whether you're looking at studio apartments for rent, duplexes for rent or condo rentals, the prices here in Heathcote could never be called "cheap." They aren't altogether unaffordable, either, especially if you know what you're looking for. Most of the available apartment rentals were built in the 1980s, which means that you'll be getting some good space for your money, however some of the homes you'll look at could use a bit of TLC. Since the rental costs don't differ much between well-kept homes and those that have become a little run-down, don't settle until you've found a place that doesn't need any work done! That said, you are going to see a lot of cute, colorful and boxy duplexes around town that are so full of character that you'll completely overlook the fact that the oven is as old as the house itself.
Setting Up Utilities
As an unincorporated town, Heathcote is lacking its own municipal government and therefore it is also lacking its own water administration board. For water and garbage services, you'll need to talk to the City of New Brunswick. As a deregulated area, Heathcote has many choices for its residents in terms of electrical and gas provision, which include Supreme Energy Inc. and The Energy Co-op. Comcast, Heathcote Cable Vision and other vendors can hook you up with television and internet services; make some comparisons and find a good price amongst them.
Working and Commuting in Heathcote
This town has a Walk Score of just 55, which doesn't bode too well for people who like to run errands on foot, let alone get to work and back without getting into a car. There are regular buses throughout New Brunswick which can help with transportation, but it isn't a bad idea for residents to have their own car. Jobs in Heathcote are diverse, and many involve marketing, corporate administration and management, as well as medical administration and treatment. If you haven't already found a job directly in Heathcote, you shouldn't be surprised if you find employment more quickly in the outer boroughs of New Brunswick.
The Neighborhoods of Heathcote
Although this community is really a neighborhood of New Brunswick, it can also be subdivided into east and west neighborhoods which are located on either side of the north-south flowing Heathcote Brook Branch river. Hotels and restaurants are numerous in both neighborhoods along Highways 1 and 27.
East Heathcote: This part of town is far sparser than the west, with several residential cul-de-sacs and fewer basic amenities, except along Highway 1. There are many small local businesses located in this part of town, however, like the Cetna Beauty Salon and Haltner's Cycles.
West Heathcote: More built-up than the east side of town, this neighborhood comprises both residential areas, small business lots and amenities such as the Kingston Mall and R&B Produce. The city center is located here, along the Promenade Boulevard, and to the south is the Heathcote Park.
Living in Heathcote
Entertainment and Fun
The biggest and best source of entertainment to the people of Heathcote is all around them in the form of parks! Locals and visitors both head out to Franklin Park and other nearby green spaces to get their hike on, so to speak, on a number of different trails. Sourland Mountain, not far to the west of town, offers natural streams, rock climbing, golf courses, tennis, paddle boats and picnicking. Of course, the town's very own Heathcote Park, at the south end of the community, is a great place for picnicking and playing a few games with friends and family on a whim. The Uptown Playaround is a fun place for kids to come and play on the jungle gym, unfortunately adults aren't generally allowed in the little play centers. Bummer.
Dining Out
Within the Heathcote city limits, dining out may just become your favorite pastime, if it isn't already! You can choose from Chinese cuisine, Japanese sushi, Italian classic meals and even Tex-Mex. Try out top-rated Sens Asian Cuisine, or the El Dorado Tex Mex Grill and Cantina. The Sushi Palace offers all-you-can-eat, while the sweet and sour chicken from Ming's Garden is a big hit with the locals. Feeling like you need something a bit fresher to pick you up at midday? Kings Salads ought to do the trick.
Princeton University
Yes, the world-famous Ivy-League Princeton University is just a few short miles south of little Heathcote, which doesn't just mean that you get to mingle with the highly-educated, but that you can snoop through their archives at the Franklin F. Moore Library. Don't be shy! Check out the Princeton Public Library and check out all the books you need to get educated for no more than the price of library membership! University communities are always putting on cultural events and hosting fun get-togethers, so don't be a stranger - your neighbors to the south have lots to share with you. And at the end of a long day, you'll have your nice, normal, non-university dorm to go home to. Perfection.
