Birthplace of Grover Cleveland, the only U.S. President to ever serve two non-consecutive terms in office!
Caldwell is a borough located in Essex County, New Jersey with a population of 7,822. It's located about 16 miles outside of New York City, making it a prime choice for anyone who works in the city but is hesitant about renting an apartment there. The area is considered a suburb of both New York City and Newark, so many residents work in one or the other. When it was founded, it was meant to be its own self-contained community, but eventually, the populations of New York and Newark spread out so much that they started to trickle into Caldwell. New Jersey Monthly listed Caldwell as the third best place to live in New Jersey in its 2010 rankings!
Moving to Caldwell
What to Expect
Almost all the property here is made up of single-family homes in small subdivisions, and the area is almost 100% residential. There are also precious few rentals here, so if your apartment search is focused on renting instead of buying, be sure to give yourself a little extra time to look.
What to Look For
When you're starting an apartment hunt, you should have a clear idea of exactly what you're trying to find. The market will be much harder if you're looking for a high-rise apartment as opposed to a townhouse or single-family home. Be clear with yourself about what your needs are, and it will help you find the place of your dreams.
When to Look
If you're planning a move here, you'll probably want to give your hunt a little more time than you normally would. There are very few rental units in this borough, and even fewer if you're looking for all bills paid. Start looking early so that you have a better chance of finding a pet-friendly apartment in Caldwell, if you need one. It's easier to find open housing here in the summer months, so try to look then if you can. If you have to look in the wintertime, just be prepared to find fewer houses on the market and maybe give yourself a little more time!
What You'll Need
The more work you put into it, the more quickly you'll be able to find a place. When you set up appointments to view apartments, show up looking sharp and professional. In a market like this, you don't want to take any chances, and first impressions do make a difference! Be sure to also bring all the rental documents you need, in case you decide you want to apply for the apartment right there. This means a copy of your ID, your credit report, bank statements, pay stubs, letter of employment and references. This will help make sure that you can start the process and get approved right away, so you don't run the risk of losing it to another renter. You'll probably have to put a deposit check down on an apartment to secure it before you move in. You can usually expect this to be one month's rent, so make sure you have two months' rent saved up before move-in day. Sometimes this catches people off guard, so it's good to prepare for it in advance!
Neighborhoods in Caldwell
Although there are no distinct neighborhoods in Caldwell, if you're looking into premier apartments in the New York City area, it's is a great place to consider. It is more expensive than other areas in the country, true, but it's still cheaper than living in Manhattan, and you can get there in a flash! You'll also get a lot of space and a high quality of life for the amount you're paying. More bang for your buck!
Living in Caldwell
Caldwell might be one of a kind, but there are a few others towns that have the name Caldwell in them -- North Caldwell and West Caldwell. Collectively, the three are referred to as "The Caldwells," even though they are separate towns. The city of Caldwell is a tiny one and you'll find that there aren't really any separate neighborhoods but that the whole town has a pretty cohesive feel to it! New Jersey Transit bus service stops in town and can transport you throughout the city, as well as to Newark and New York!
Think of all the perks of living here! The convenience of getting to New York City, more spacious homes, and the number of great shops and restaurants in town make it well worth the price tag. The way Caldwell is set up, the whole borough is completely residential except for Bloomfield Avenue, which runs straight through the center of town and is chock full of businesses. You'll find Angeloni's Restaurant, Russillo Pizzeria and Il Vecchio Caf̩ stretched out along this road. There's also a number of florists, book stores, convenient stores and grocery markets located here. The rest of town is filled with beautiful subdivisions and big, expensive homes.
