Winters has always been a city that revolves around agriculture, but the over the years, the main crops have changed from fresh and dried fruits to almonds and walnuts. So if you're nuts about nuts, this city may be perfect for you!
Winters is located in Yolo County, about 10 minutes north of Vacaville. Its 6,624 residents enjoy a fairly rural environment, but they're still close enough to other major cities that they can easily drive to some exciting places on a whim. Day trip to Napa? No problem; it will only take 45 minutes to drive there. Want to visit San Francisco? Okay, it's just an hour southwest. Yeah, as you might guess, the main advantage of Winters is its amazing location.
Moving to Winters
Want to move to Winters? Well, get in line! Apparently this gem has already been discovered by most people looking for rental homes in a cute little California town. Its teeny tiny vacancy rate of practically zero makes that clear. But if you look hard enough and give yourself a few months, you can likely still find a one bedroom apartment or even something a little more spacious.
Housing Available in Winters
If you want a single-family home, you'll have an easier time of finding that than condos, townhouses, or apartment complexes. That's because detached homes make up over two thirds of the properties here. However, there's also a sprinkling of pretty much every other type of home, which means you can expect some variety as you look for places to live in Winters.
Get to Know Other Home Details
The type of housing in this city is not the only detail you should consider. You should also think about the age and size of the home you want. Nearly half of the properties in this city were built sometime between 1970 and 1999. More than two thirds have three or four bedrooms, so hopefully you either have some people you want to live with or just need lots of space for your stuff.
Signing the Paperwork
Whether you end up with a 1 bedroom apartment or choose to rent a house, you will need to bring a few things with you when signing the lease. You should collect your last two pay stubs to show the landlord that you are gainfully employed. A deposit for the home might also be necessary. And of course, you should be prepared for the landlord to check your rental history, background, and credit. Other than that, there's not much you can do to prepare for your next move, unless you want to get a head start on packing!
Winters Neighborhoods
Winters has less than three square miles of land to choose from, so picking an area in which to live won't exactly take long. A smidge of that space is made up of water, probably due to the Putah Creek, so choose that area if you are worried about feeling landlocked here. Otherwise, you should check out the main areas of Winters before you make your move.
North Winters: Kountry Kitchen is the main point of interest in this mostly residential area. Of course, there are also lots of houses to choose from here.
South Winters: Remember that little creek? It's located in the southern area of the city, which means your only chance at waterfront--well, sort of--living is here. This is also where you will find Rotary Park, City Park, Blue Oak Park, and Community Garden. Notice a theme here? Aside from some nice outdoor areas, you can easily visit Pizza Factory, Putah Creek Cafe, and Turkovich Family Wines. Needless to say, you can't go wrong with this part of Winters.
East Winters: This is where you will find Tomat's California Cuisine, Valley Oak Park, and a variety of homes. As a nice, safe little bonus, both the Winters Police Department and the Winters Fire Department are located here.
West Winters: This part of the city features Walnut Park, Lorenzo's Town and Country Market, and Mariani Nut Company. It is also close to Interstate 505, which is handy when you want to go north and south in this area. The fact that this freeway connects to Interstate 5 is even better if you plan to travel all throughout California, and you probably will at some point.
Apartments in Winters
Whether you are looking for serviced apartments or just want a basic rental, you're in luck. For a small city, Winters has a great variety of apartments. On the south side of the city, there's Orchard Village Apartments and Creekside Apartments. Want to live north of the main street of East Grant Avenue? Check out Almondwood Apartments for two and three bedroom rentals.
Living in Winters
So now that you know a bit about housing in this city, you're probably excitedly packing your things, eager to arrive at your new home. But it's a good idea to get to know what there is to do here once you get settled in. As you might assume from the size of Winters, there aren't a lot of attractions within the city limits. Of course, there are lots of cool restaurants, including Ficelle, Buckhorn Steakhouse, and Berryessa Brewing Company. If you're a fan of wine, and that's a given, you owe it to yourself to visit Turkovich Family Wines, Berryessa Gap Vineyards, or Main Street Cellars.
Want to get active and outside once in a while? Head to Stebbins Cold Canyon Loop Trail, Putah Creek Nature Park, or Somerset Farm. If you prefer to shop, though, you might need to head out of town. Winters has small shops like Winters True Value Hardware, Eagle Drug, and Adry's Fiesta Boutique, but you'll find more stores and even malls just 10 miles south in Victorville.
