Neighborhood Guide
Moving to The Embarcadero

You won't find any house rentals in the Embarcadero. It's pretty industrial, so make sure that's the environment you're looking for. You will be close to plenty of nightlife and within easy commuting distance to the other side of San Francisco Bay and Oakland via the bridge, or to other parts of San Francisco thanks to the Embarcadero BART and Muni Metro subway station.

Also, keep in mind that San Francisco has some of the U.S.'s highest rents (we're talking four figures!), and its cost of living makes it about 99% more expensive than practically anywhere else in the country. Save plenty of money for your move, and then save some more. The majority - 65% -- of San Franciscans are renters, and vacancy rates are low at 8.26%, so prepare to pound the pavement searching for apartments to rent. You're much more likely to find a loft studio apartment or one-bedroom apartments for rent than larger units, although The Gateway apartments and townhomes near Pier 7 do offer plans up to four bedrooms. NorthPoint Apartments near Pier 39 are more indicative of the offerings, where studio and two bedroom are more the norm. When you do score your place, you'll be rewarded by being in one of the most exciting areas of one of the most exciting cities in the world.

Notable Sites of The Embarcadero

The Embarcadero is host to tons of notable San Francisco sites. Below are just a few of the favorites.

Herb Caen Way...: Named for local columnist Herb Caen, the sidewalk between Harrison Street and Broadway deliberately includes an ellipsis in honor of Caen's Pulitzer Prize-winning writing style.

Ferry Building: A terminal for ferries crossing the Bay, the Ferry Building also has plenty of office space. What it's known for most, however, is the distinctive 245-foot tall clock tower in the center of the building that can be seen from many parts of the city.

Justin Herman Plaza: A popular lunch spot for office workers, the plaza directly in front of the Ferry Building hosts free concerts during summer days. In winter, it transforms into a skating rink.

Embarcadero Center: Next to the Ferry Building, this is a collection of four high-rise buildings that house the Hyatt Regency San Francisco in addition to numerous other tenants. The edges of all the buildings light up, resembling four books on a shelf.

Fisherman's Wharf: One of San Fran's most recognizable spots, it's home to Pier 39, many seafood restaurants, a wax museum and the not-to-be-missed Ghirardelli Square.

Pier 39: Part of Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 is a shopping mall on a pier. This is a popular tourist attraction loved by locals as well. There are restaurants, 3D rides, an aquarium and plenty of street performers to keep everyone entertained and coming back for more.
