City Guide for St. Albans, WV

St. Albans has been through a bit of an identity crisis during its 200-year history. First called Ft. Tackett, the city was then known as Philippi, named after one of the area's initial settlers. Later it became Coalsmouth, due to its location along the Coal River. In 1868 the city was incorporated, not as St. Albans, but as Kanawha City. It wasn't until 1872 that the city finally became known as St. Albans. It's been that way for over 140 years now, so maybe the city is due for yet another name...

The city of St. Albans is located close to the western edge of Kanawha County in West Virginia. The city is nestled snugly at the intersection of the Coal and Kanawha rivers, with 11,044 residents living in its 3.70 square miles. The climate in St. Albans is typical for the region, with temperatures of 60 to 90 degrees in the middle of summer, and 20 to 40 in the winter. The city gets an average of 42 inches of rain a year, and nearly 20 inches of snow. The comfort index, which measures summertime humidity, is 46%, close to the national average and about what you'd expect for a riverside city. See more

What to keep in mind when looking for dog friendly apartments in St. Albans, WV

Finding an apartment in St. Albans that accepts your pet may not be easy, but it’s very possible. Keep in mind, most of the time you’ll have to pay a premium for bringing your dog along in your new apartment. Some apartments require you to pay monthly pet rent, others will ask for a non-refundable pet fee or a refundable pet deposit.

While landlords and property management companies have varying pet policies, most of them limit the number of dogs you can bring to your apartment and include breed and weight restrictions.

If your pet falls under some of the restrictions outlined in the pet policy, it’s still worth asking the landlord if they can make an exception for your dog. Preparing a pet resume ahead of time could help you build the case for your furry friend. Make sure to include information on behavioral training your dog went through over the years and proof of vaccinations. If you can, include references from your former landlord and/or neighbors.
