City Guide
Lake City, Seattle
Just 8 miles from the Amazon headquarters and close to other tech hubs, Seattle renters are discovering that Lake City is an overlooked gem when it comes to convenience and affordability. You’ll find a nod to the neighborhood’s heritage as “Little Germany” at hangouts like Kaffeeklatsch, a German-themed coffee shop. Today, this neighborhood belongs to everybody, and those who appreciate an unpretentious atmosphere and an occasional bargain will especially feel right at home.

You’ll find fewer bars and nightclubs in Lake City than in other Seattle neighborhoods, which lends a quieter atmosphere to the streets.. The Lake City Neighborhood Farmers Market is where you’ll find fresh produce and local vendors. The neighborhood also has a lot of great parks, like Meadowbrook Park, which includes a large pond and walking trails, as well as the large Virgil Flaim Park, which has 2.8 acres that include walking trails and play spaces for the kids. If your kids are of the furry variety, the Dogwood Play Park is an indoor space where your pet can be active even on those rainy Seattle days.

There’s a great mix of apartments for rent in Lake City, from older units in 4-plexes to brand-new luxury condos. Lake City is one of the few places in Seattle where you can still find some good deals on rent. Some apartment complexes offer discounts such as a free month’s rent, so it’s always a good idea to ask about any available specials or incentives.

Lake City Way is the main street in town where you’ll find all the action. The Elliot Bay Public House and Brewery is a popular meeting spot and is generally a family-friendly establishment, with great food and friendly crowds. Tubs Gourmet Subs is a local favorite so good you’ll never look at chain sandwich shops the same way again. Dick’s Drive In is a burger joint that has been serving up classic burgers, fries and shakes since 1954—it’s such a legend, it’s even appeared in music videos. (But stop by the ATM first, because Dick’s only takes cash.)

You’ll find plenty of community spirit in Lake City. Salmonfest Seattle is an annual street fair and celebration of local salmon, which brings visitors from all over the city. Lake Washington runs along the eastern edge of Lake City and other nearby neighborhoods, and you’ll see people enjoying the lakeside beaches in the summer. The Lake City Community Center also serves as a hub, hosting everything from craft fairs to fundraising events for helping neighbors in need.

Lake City has some walkable areas and rates well on walkability because of the number of stores and restaurants located within a close distance to each other. However, many streets don’t have sidewalks and some streets such as Lake City Way are pretty busy, so you’ll want to use caution if walking. Most people here still choose to drive and only walk or bike around the residential areas for recreation. Renters also use public transit, and the Sound Transit system is building a second light rail station accessible to Lake City that will open in late 2016. Those who ride the bus enjoy the fact that Lake City is the first stop when heading into downtown, which makes it easy to always find a seat.

When you’re ready to find an apartment for rent in Lake City, let your budget be your guide. Lake City is a mix of retro and new when it comes to buildings, including apartments. Parking may or may not be included as well, so make sure you check your lease; it’s not uncommon for apartments to include only one reserved parking space. Newer apartments and condos are more likely to offer environmentally-friendly features like LEED-certified construction, smoke-free buildings, and extensive recycling programs. Of course, most newer apartments also have amenities you’d expect, such as granite countertops and modern cabinets. Many apartments are also pet-friendly but will expect an additional deposit.

When you’re ready to come home to a convenient location with quiet neighbors, Lake City is calling you!
