The city of Watauga, Texas, took its name from a Cherokee word that means "village of many springs."

Watauga is just 10 miles away from the center of Fort Worth, so you're never far away from some action. Although it's considered a suburb of Fort Worth, Watauga is also a city in its own right. The first settlers arrived in 1843 (although the area was populated by Native Americans before then), but the city wasn't officially incorporated until 1958. Today, the city has around 23,497 inhabitants (per 2010 U.S. Census data) but is still a fairly close-knit community.

Watauga Neighborhoods

Although Watauga isn't the largest city (it covers just over 4 square miles), there are a number of fairly different neighborhoods. The one you choose to live in can make a difference in your life. For instance, some neighborhoods only contain larger rental properties and others may be closer to shops and other facilities.

Bursey: This is quite a mixed neighborhood, with a good number of both houses and apartment complexes. Many of the properties were built quite recently.

Starnes: Although this neighborhood is a little ways away from many of Watauga's amenities, it benefits from having more green space. Most of the properties are well established, but not exactly historic. You'll mostly find larger and medium-sized homes in this area.

City Center: The city center neighborhood is (surprise, surprise!) where you'll find many of Watauga's shops, bars and eateries. You'll generally find smaller properties in this area.

Denton: Most of the properties in this neighborhood are detached houses. They tend to have slightly larger plots, compared to some other areas of the city.

Life in Watauga

Those who love warm weather will enjoy the climate in Watauga. Summers are scorching, and while it can get cold in the winter, it's usually fairly mild. However, in exchange for these sunny days, you do have to live with the slight risk of serious storms, including tornadoes. Well, they say you don't get anything in life for free. You can enjoy the balmy days at any of Watauga's seven city parks, which have a range of facilities from football fields and basketball courts to walking trails and picnic areas. Since there's no public transit system in Watauga, most residents drive, so it's pretty imperative that you have some kind of vehicle if you ever want to leave. There are some great places to eat out in the city. Fresco's Cocina is rumored to have some of the best Tex-Mex food in town; or you could head to Ying Cafe for some tasty Chinese cuisine. There's no lack of community groups and events in the town, from the annual Wild West Watauga Fest in May to regular quilting groups.
