Named after the famed revolutionary war hero Nathanael Greene, Greeneville has had an interesting history. In 1785, it was named the capital of the short-lived State of Franklin. Before the Civil War, the town was a strong supporter of the abolition of slavery, and President Andrew Johnson, the successor of President Lincoln, called it home.
