Tucked in the mountains of South Carolina, there once stood a hotel named Fountain Inn. Though the hotel is no more, the entire community sprung up around it, and the area took on its original name. A marker still stands commemorating the inn -- the birthplace of the community.

Fountain Inn sits along the border of Greenville and Laurens counties with a population of just over 6,000 people. It carries a couple of nicknames, too: "The Diamond Tip of the Golden Strip" and "The Front Porch of the Upstate."

Living in Fountain Inn

Fountain Inn loves to celebrate and annually hosts festivals like the Christmas Festival, International Festival, and Aunt Het Day, in which they celebrate the area's notable cartoonist, humorist and journalist Robert Quillen. Fountain Inn was also home to something else a bit unusual -- a one legged tap dancer named Clayton "Peg Legs" Bates. NFL player Travelle Wharton also hails from Fountain Inn.

One of the advantages to living in Fountain Inn is experiencing the four seasons. The mountains bloom vividly with spring wildflowers, which give way to mild summers averaging less than 90 degrees. There is some humidity coming from the Atlantic, but the altitude keeps it reasonable. Fall brings vibrantly colored leaves, giving way to winters averaging in the mid-30 degree range.

Neighborhoods of Fountain Inn

Places for rent in Fountain Inn are pretty easy to come by. You can find two and three bedroom homes for rent complete with nice amenities or a home for rent with a big yard and plenty of space!

There are numerous apartment complexes to choose from in the area. Fully equipped units in these apartment complexes are fewer and further between, especially those that are conveniently located near the downtown area. Here's a little more info about the different neighborhoods in town!

State Highway / Mckelvey Road: This is a fairly rural part of town that runs along Route 714. It's a great place for commuters to Greenville as you can zip back and forth super easily!

Route 418 / Jenkins Bridge Road: This area borders I-385. Milacron Drive runs straight through it, which is home to several local businesses.

City Center: This is where most of the action is clustered in Fountain Inn. You'll find all kinds of cafes and restaurants, such as The Railhouse Steak and Seafood and Sweet Catherine's.

Moving to Fountain Inn

Fountain Inn is convenient to Greenville, which is just 15 miles away. In fact, many of Fountain Inn's residents find an apartment in Fountain Inn and commute to Greenville to keep from paying the higher rent costs of the larger city. The city is just a couple of hours drive to South Carolina's beaches.

Greenville airport services the community. The best places to eat include Sweet Catherine's, J. Peters Bar and Grill and Rail House. Other fun places to visit in the area include the Younts Center for Performing Arts and Black Horse Run. Property rentals are available close to the downtown area of Fountain Inn, as well as in the outskirts where things are more private and scenic.
