City Guide for Newberg, OR

With its city motto, “A Great Place to Grow!” you just know that Newberg will be a nice hometown to put down some roots. But, first thing’s first: you must find a place to live. Well, we've got plenty of listings, local info, and renting advice for you in this handy little apartment guide, so stick around to learn all you need to know for a smooth move.

Just 25 miles from Portland, Newberg is a beautiful, 'burby, boutique-y, wine country, coffee shop-saturated Christian college town. The area is full of natural aesthetics, from the orchards to the parks to the golf course to the Willamette River, this area is just teeming with pleasant and colorful surprises. It's a charmed life for local Newbergians, however, Newberg commuters to the Portland area will have to deal with some terribly tedious traffic.

A couple decades ago, this area was just farm country with little need for big highways. But, things change. Sigh. Portland's suburbs are starting to grow suburbs of their own, and traffic conditions along the major routes and back roads are now equally frustrating. Just 25 miles can easily take an hour or more to drive, especially during tourist season. If you plan on working or playing in Portland, be prepared for traffic jams ahead of you.

Rental rates are all over the place. You can find cheap apartments for just $500, larger affordable apartments for $700 - $900, rental homes ranging from $600 to over $2,500, as well as a few retirement community rentals that cost over $4,000 a month. There are neighborhoods geared towards retirees, though they really aren't too far from the young families and students that live around George Fox University. Low income and high income, college students and families, old and young, people of all types live right next to each other around here. Cheap apartments and luxury rental homes can be found in the same neighborhood, the same block even. It's a nice mix that keeps things interesting, yet pleasant and safe.

What kind of amenities can you expect in this rental market? Well, not many, unless you’re 65 or better and living in a retirement community (in which case, you're amenities are endless!). Most apartment buildings are smaller with just basic extras such as laundry facilities, storage, and parking. In a city like this, you won't need the apartment communities to serve as entertainment. Find a place next to the golf course, near the wineries, backing up to a park, or in downtown for the best amenities right at your doorstep.

Looking for a pet friendly rental? Well, you’re in luck. There are plenty of apartment rentals that are cat friendly, as well as few rental homes that are dog friendly. Dog friendly rentals sometimes take a diligent home hunter, though. If you can't find any dog friendly rental properties in our listings, try checking the local classifieds to find a dog-friendly landlord.

Now that you've done your homework, we reckon you're ready to become a local Newbergian. It's truly beautiful country that you’re sure to fall head-over-heels in love with. Best of luck out there!

What to keep in mind when looking for apartments with pools in Newberg, OR

Finding apartments with a pool in Newberg means cooling off from the summer heat, get-togethers, and more exercise. However, there are a few things to consider before signing your next lease.

Ask the property management how long the pool is open each year. Is it seasonal? Does the pool have a heat pump to make it practical to swim beyond summertime? You should also inquire about pool rules, capacity, and if unattended children are permitted. The size of the pool also matters. An oversized apartment complex with a tiny pool could mean crowded summers and frustrations when trying to take a quick dip.

Finding apartments with a pool in Newberg could also drive up your rent, but may be worth the trade-off. Assess the overall amenities of the property. Apartments with a pool may look fantastic on the outside, but inside the kitchen could need an upgrade or the bedrooms could prove smaller than you want.

Once you find the apartment of your dreams, enjoy an afternoon swim and get to know your new neighbors.
