La Grande, OR, is a rather small city located in Union County, Oregon. It is the seat of the county and is also home to more than 13,082 people. The name, "La Grand," was coined by Charles Dause, who was an early settler in the region, and it was an allusion to the spectacular beauty of the area. This name is not the first name of the city, which was initially called "Brownsville," but was compelled to change its name due to the fact that another city in Linn County was already using it. The first permanent settler in this city was Benjamin Brown in 1861, and the settlement had been named in his honor as Brownsville.
