The original name in 1802 was St. Clair, named after the governor of the Northwest Territory, Arthur St. Clair. Between 1802 and 1816 many residents called the city Fawcettstown, until the name was changed to Liverpool in 1816. The name arrived at what it still is today, East Liverpool, in 1834 when another town named Liverpool in the eastern part of Ohio (which is no longer called Liverpool) complained of using the same name as their town.
