Lockport, New York, was named for the locks that connect the passageways of the Erie Canal. The locks were the idea of a man named Nathan Roberts. A sixty-foot drop in the water level occurred at Lockport. There had to be a way to raise and lower the boats on their way to Buffalo. So Roberts devised a twin flight of locks, five locks each. Construction began in 1823.
