Haverstraw is a unique town in Rockland County, New York, that actually contains three villages and several hamlets; one of these is called Haverstraw. The name of the town came from a similar Dutch word that means "oat straw," which refers to the type of grass that grows here along the river to the north of town. Want to hear a cool bit of history? It was here that Benedict Arnold brought Major Andre to surrender West Point to the British for 20,000 pounds during the American Revolutionary War! Obviously, it didn't work out quite that way.

Neighborhoods in Haverstraw

Haverstraw has three basic neighborhoods, including the Village Center. Nearly 12,000 people live in this town, although many of them are technically residents of a village or hamlet outside of Haverstraw Proper.

Village Center: The Village Center's borders are Conger Avenue and West Street. The population is quite dense here, which means that if you are looking for studio apartments for rent or apartment complexes, this is the place! Of course, home values here and in the surrounding neighborhoods are quite high, and rental costs are right up there with them. Why? In many cases, these buildings were built in the 1930s and 1940s, and they are maintained with incredible historical detail. They're pretty!

Hudson River: This neighborhood runs parallel to the Village Center, just to the east, meaning that its own eastern border is the vast Hudson River. Bowline Point Park is at the northern tip, while homes and businesses are crowded into the center section. Studios and apartments with paid utilities can be found here along the river.

Gurnee: This is the least-expensive Haverstraw neighborhood, since it is the furthest from river views. Partially in the realm of the High Tor State Park, Gurnee has a selection of newer homes, although most were built between 1940 and 1999. Townhomes, apartments, small- and medium-size houses can be found here for slightly less than in Hudson River or Village Center.
