City Guide for South Valley, NM

"To the right in the broad corn field mowed to stubble, two roadrunners jerk their Mohawk heads and glare. Geese arrive around 5 p.m., swinging from sky weighted bells in wings slings lowering great feathers spreading tawny webbed feet lightly on earth...." - I Send Prayers Out by Jimmy Santiago Baca

South Valley, located in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, is an unincorporated zone on the southern side of the Albuquerque metro area. It straddles both sides of the Rio Grande in a gently sloping valley to the west of I-25 and Kirkland Air Force Base--doesn't that just put your mind at ease? Just about 42,000 people live in the 30 square miles designated as South Valley, with more occupying farmland on the edges. The entire region breathes the interfaces between nature, history, and humanity. But don't worry, it's not all cornstalks and alfalfa fields here. See more

What to keep in mind when looking for dog friendly apartments in South Valley, NM

Finding an apartment in South Valley that accepts your pet may not be easy, but it’s very possible. Keep in mind, most of the time you’ll have to pay a premium for bringing your dog along in your new apartment. Some apartments require you to pay monthly pet rent, others will ask for a non-refundable pet fee or a refundable pet deposit.

While landlords and property management companies have varying pet policies, most of them limit the number of dogs you can bring to your apartment and include breed and weight restrictions.

If your pet falls under some of the restrictions outlined in the pet policy, it’s still worth asking the landlord if they can make an exception for your dog. Preparing a pet resume ahead of time could help you build the case for your furry friend. Make sure to include information on behavioral training your dog went through over the years and proof of vaccinations. If you can, include references from your former landlord and/or neighbors.
