City Guide for Pompton Lakes, NJ

If you know your boxing, you'll know the name Joe Louis. In fact, most people would recognize that name anyway, boxing aficionado or not. Louis is widely regarded as one of the greatest ever boxers, and was World Heavyweight Champion from 1937 to 1949. For part of that highly decorated and illustrious career, Joe Louis lived and trained in a certain borough called Pompton Lakes.

Pompton Lakes is, as just mentioned, a borough, and is found in Passaic County, New Jersey. The population hasn't grown much in the last couple of decades, increasing from just over 10,500 in 1990 up to the 2010 figure of 11,097, which means residents have been able to keep Pompton Lakes a secret -- until now. The borough is an outer ring suburb of New York City, with Midtown Manhattan about 20 miles to the south east. In fact, if you head up to the higher peaks of the borough, you'll be able to see the skyline of the Big Apple a way's away and, with it being so close, a fair number of the local community tend to commute in for work. There are three rivers that run through the borough -- the Wanaque, Pequannock and Ramapo rivers -- which provide the local people with a great deal of things to do throughout the year. With a mild climate with clear seasons, Pompton Lakes is a great place for anyone looking for a quieter and greener place to live within touching distance of New York. See more

What to keep in mind when looking for apartments with parking in Pompton Lakes, NJ

Parking can be at a premium in some cities where spaces are challenging to find. Some Pompton Lakes apartments offer parking options, either outside in a common area or within a private garage.

Ask about the stipulations around the parking. Those may include how many guests are allowed and where tenants park.

Some apartments may only allow parking in front of your own unit. Guest parking may be in a common area for up to one person.

If parking is scarce, look around the area before you sign a lease. Ample street parking in a neighborhood championed for its safety is probably fine. However, it’s probably not worth signing a lease if it means battling for daily parking for you and your guests.

Research whether you need a city permit to park in the neighborhood. Look into the associated costs and what to do about visitors who need parking.

Some tenants prefer garage parking near their units. However, an open-air lot may prove cheaper.

Keep in mind that the cost of wear and tear from parking outside can add up. It may be less expensive, in the long run, to look for an apartment with garage parking.
