A lot of people meet friends for life in Old Bridge. In fact, that might explain why the population has boomed recently to a whopping 60,456. Best of all, this township is right near "the City," so if you want an apartment complex with easy travel options to Manhattan, this might be your dream home.

Renting in Old Bridge

Most rentals here are apartments but you can find some great rental condos and townhomes. Rental properties are not inexpensive. Most are convenient to some form of public transportation. Three hundred acres of leafy, shady parkland with trees that turn those gorgeous fall colors make it a lovely place to live all year.

The Cost

It's less than living in "the City," that's for sure. You get more bang for your buck with larger spaces. Look for all utilities paid when renting an apartment, though, because temperatures range from freezing to melting and you won't want to skimp on comfort.

Be Ready to Roll

For most places to live in Old Bridge, you'll need the basics -- a cashier's or bank check, signed letter from your employer verifying employment and salary, rental history with a letter signed by your former landlord, and a credit check done by the renting agency and paid for by you to the tune of $25.00-$100.00 per check. Look for a long-term lease. It's usually cheaper in the long run and most landlords are looking for tenants who will stay put.

Neighborhoods in Old Bridge

The spicy southwestern part of Old Bridge, near Texas Road, has some great areas. If you love the excitement of drag racing, head for nearby Englishtown Raceway Park. Texas Road/Rte 9 is close by.

The east side of Route 9 near Old Bridge High School. bordering Matawan, is more refined. Choose Route 9 for shopping, nightlife and dining in nearby Marlboro or Route 34 (Aberdeen), or Route 35 (Hazlet, Holmdel, Middletown). If you're commuting to "The City" (almost every employed adult is) you have the option of the train (10 minutes from from here) or the bus, or go to Cheesequake Park & Ride. One of the best sushi places in the area is located nearby -- Ganga Sushi -- amazing! Tennis courts, a skating rink, Lacrosse fields, sports parks and more fill Old Bridgers' free time year round.

Getting Around

Old Bridge is spread out over 42 square miles. Public transportation is available in most areas and in some neighborhoods walking may be the easiest form of commuting. Interstates are nearby if you just don't want to leave the car alone at home. Great shopping and dining is within minutes of wherever you live.

If you're headed into Manhattan, expect a 90 minute commute if you use public transportation -- trains or express buses -- but it's better than driving and cheaper than parking because parking spaces in NY are at a premium. If you still want to drive yourself, Routes 18, 35, 34, GSP and the NJ Turnpike are all close. Keep in mind that traffic sometimes gets snarly.
