New Jersey's tallest lighthouse is located in Absecon, off Pacific and Rhode Island Avenues near Atlantic City. The Absecon Lighthouse has 228 steps, and it is one of the oldest lighthouses in the country, as it was first lit in 1857.

Several things make New Jersey a great place to live. First, it's among the oldest and most historical places in the nation. It serves an oasis for workers who want to escape the grind of the big city after the workday is done, and boasts some of the most lavish resorts in the world. Absecon sits right on the bay, and offers everything you'd want from a big city, packed into a tiny population of just over 8,400.

Moving to Absecon

Absecon is filled with Atlantic City workers who make the simple, 11-minute trip each day to get away from the hectic tourist atmosphere of the casinos and resorts. This makes property extremely valuable here, but there are still several desirable places to rent in Absecon. Try to move during the spring or fall, as the summers here are crowded and the winters are quite cold, either of which can make a move less than pleasant.

Absecon has 33% fewer tornadoes and 97% less earthquake activity than the rest of the nation. And now for the less than stellar news: it does occasionally get hit by severe storms, flooding, blizzards and the stray hurricane. So there's that. Just check the weather reports as moving day approaches to make sure you won't face any of these hassles. And you might want to just keep the habit of staying updated on the local weather after you move here, you know, so you can dress accordingly.

If you don't have a car, there is ample bus and train service available between Absecon and Atlantic City. Most of the Absecon apartment rentals, condos and townhouses use natural gas furnaces (there are very few with electric heaters), so if you move during the wintertime, you might need assistance lighting the pilot light. The local utility company will usually send someone out to light it for you at no charge, or you can just ask the technicians when they arrive to turn on your gas service.

Absecon's premier apartments and condo rentals can be both hard to find and hard to afford, but you can often find reasonably priced one bedroom apartments. Occasionally, all utilities paid apartments and townhouses are also available.

Neighborhoods of Absecon

Absecon can be divided into a few different neighborhoods for you to choose from, but neither is worse than the other. Either way, you're going to love living here.

Bay Colony: Many of the neighborhoods of Absecon are pretty nice, such as Bay Colony. Here you can find condo and townhouse rentals most of the time. Just expect to pay an arm and maybe a leg, unless you want a studio apartment or a small one bedroom unit.

Victoria Crossing: This community features a neighborhood watch program that should help you sleep a little sounder at night, unless the neighbor's dog just loves to bark!

Victoria Estates: This area also has a Neighborhood Watch program, as well as a neighborhood association. Home rentals run a little higher here since landlords have to recoup those HOA fees. But the lack of weeds is worth it!

Victoria Pointe: Perhaps you're sensing a theme? Yes, there are lots of communities in Absecon using the name Victoria. Victoria Pointe is another nice community with a neighborhood association and a Neighborhood Watch program. It isn't always easy to find rental properties in the pricier sections of Absecon, but when available, they are generally luxurious.

Village at Harding's Run: In addition to a neighborhood association, Village at Harding's Run offers a clubhouse for residents to enjoy. Again, most people here own their homes and it can be difficult to snag a rental property.

Living in Absecon

One of the most popular summer activities in Absecon is shopping at farmer's markets. Most of the communities have organized farmer's markets and offer a variety of arts and crafts, fresh locally-grown vegetables and fruits, cheeses, maple syrup (this syrup is nothing like you get in the grocery store!), and fresh herbs.

There are a couple of parks in Absecon, too, including GreenAcresPark and HeritagePark. One of the most interesting shops in the town is the Candle and Christmas Shoppe, which is worth a visit for nothing else but the smell. New Jersey is also the diner capital of the world, so it's always convenient to grab a sandwich and soda when you're out and about. Some of the most popular eateries in Absecon are Vic's Subs, Seaview's and China Sea of Absecon.

Sailing is another popular activity during Absecon summers, and charters are available if you don't happen to own your own boat. The community also has a library, and you'll soon learn that New Jersey has the highest per capita number of shopping malls in the world and more racehorses than the entire (much larger) state of Kentucky.

You can expect your neighbors to be well educated, which is usually something to be impressed with. There are a lot of wonderful education opportunities that surround the local area. That certainly isn't a bad thing!

There is no shortage of jobs in the area, either. The most prominent industries in the area are food and accommodation services (in all those casino resorts in Atlantic City), the arts and entertainment industry, retail sales and administrative support, construction (somebody's got to build all those resorts), public administration (New Jersey is one of the most heavily regulated states in the country, and has the highest tax rate, too), health care, science and technology. The average commute time is about 17 minutes.

Absecon enjoys lower than the national crime rate, but the air quality is just average, and the poverty level is near the national level, at 10%. Residents depend mostly on the television and radio stations of Pleasantville and Atlantic for news, weather, sports and entertainment. But perhaps most important of all is the fact that the area offers 86 grocery stores, 24 gas stations, two supercenters and 311 full-service restaurants. And then of course it's only a short drive to the bright and shiny attractions available in Atlantic City!
