Norfolk: Here’s Johnny! Welcome to Norfolk, where notable resident Johnny Carson graduated high school. This northeastern Nebraska city of a little less than 25,000 has a great mix of amenities. So, let's have a look at the renting world these days and find you the home of your dreams!
If you want to pass for a local there’s one important thing you’ll need to know: the name of your city is not pronounced “nor-folk,” nor is it pronounced in the northeastern tradition of “nor-fok.” Norfolk was originally called North Fork after the nearby rivers then it was eventually shortened to Norfork. When the name was submitted to the post office, it was mistakenly changed to the more common city name, Norfolk. Despite the legal spelling, locals still call the city “Norfork”.
Like many other similarly sized Nebraska towns, Norfolk owes its existence to the railroad industry. With the decline of railroad shipping and transportation, the city now serves as the commercial center of the county and northern Nebraska, which means you won’t have to commute as far as your neighbors to access great shopping, dining, and entertainment in the city’s numerous chain stores and local establishments. The public library is also a beloved local institution that provides great community services.
Overall, Norfolk is a friendly, welcoming and safe city with a low cost of living and tons of cheap apartments.
Many of the city’s best apartment rentals will be found in the northeastern quadrant of town near the Sunset Plaza Mall. There’s a high concentration of apartment complexes offering everything from studio apartments to three bedrooms.
You’ll find great rental homes scattered throughout town, particularly in the northwest of the city center. Rental homes frequently come with washer/dryer hook ups and yards.
With a great, diverse rental market, you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a pet friendly rental, or an apartment that offers short-term leases. You may have to negotiate with your landlord and pay a slightly higher deposit, but overall, Norfolk rentals are quite friendly and accommodating.
So welcome to Norfolk! Enjoy all that this northern Nebraska retail hub has to offer! View Norfolk City Guide
Parking can be at a premium in some cities where spaces are challenging to find. Some Norfolk apartments offer parking options, either outside in a common area or within a private garage.
Ask about the stipulations around the parking. Those may include how many guests are allowed and where tenants park.
Some apartments may only allow parking in front of your own unit. Guest parking may be in a common area for up to one person.
If parking is scarce, look around the area before you sign a lease. Ample street parking in a neighborhood championed for its safety is probably fine. However, it’s probably not worth signing a lease if it means battling for daily parking for you and your guests.
Research whether you need a city permit to park in the neighborhood. Look into the associated costs and what to do about visitors who need parking.
Some tenants prefer garage parking near their units. However, an open-air lot may prove cheaper.
Keep in mind that the cost of wear and tear from parking outside can add up. It may be less expensive, in the long run, to look for an apartment with garage parking.
