Founded in 1850 as a steamboat terminal, Stevensville is the most populous part of Maryland's Queen Anne's County, where it is home to one of just two registered historic districts. It is one of several communities on Kent Island, the largest in Chesapeake Bay.

The town's history is evident in its historic area, where dozens of structures hark back to Stevensville's earliest days. It's also what's known as a census-designated place or CDP, and covers an area of just over six square miles in all.

Since Stevensville is little more than a neighborhood itself, it isn't really divided up into neighborhoods. But you can choose to be closer to the thick of things or on the edge of town.

Stevensville Historic District: This has about a hundred structures and is on the National Register of Historic Places. You'll find it mainly focused along East Main Street, some of Love Point Road and part of what was once Cockey Lane. The old post office, for example, is a gorgeous building that was visited by Franklin D. Roosevelt and features on an 1877 map of the area.

The 2012 American Community Survey reckoned that average commute time was longer than the median of 23 minutes by nearly nine minutes. So, if you don't like two long daily drives, this might not be the best place for you to live. It's just the way things are around these parts. Most households have two or more vehicles, and the area is also home to the small, county-owned Bay Bridge Airport, overlooking Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

And, while it may be pretty small, Stevensville still packs a punch when it comes to offering things to do. There are plenty of options to spend your free time. Hike or cycle the Kent Island South Trail, or sample authentic Italian fare at the Rustic restaurant and wine bar -- alternatively, you could visit the Smokehouse Grill or the Kentmorr restaurant and crab house for some genuine Maryland seafood. Who doesn't love a famous Maryland crab cake? You can even get up close and personal to some local wildlife at the Terrapin Nature Park.
