Bryans Road started as a satellite town of the Naval Support Facility in the nearby city of Indian Head. Located on the Potomac River, south of Washington, DC, it has become a commuter town for federal employers, as well as people who work in neighboring cities and Virginia. As part of the Washington DC Metro Area, Bryans Road has access to the big city life without sacrificing the small town feel.

Moving to Bryans Road

With its proximity to DC, Bryans Road is a sought after and growing suburb. However, there is a definite lack of multi-unit housing. This means you won't find a townhouse or condo for rent in Bryans Road, but you do have a number of single-family homes to choose from. You may even be able to find studio or 1 bedroom apartments for rent in a converted garage or basement. Landlords here can be picky, because much of the population in the DC area has a decent income and steady, government-related employment. Make sure your previous rental references are up to par and that you have at least one month's rent for a security deposit before you apply. Bryans Road is a small town, so rental real estate is a premium here. Start looking at least a month before you need to move.

Neighborhoods

There are three distinct neighborhoods in Bryans Road, MD. Here is a list of them:

Downtown: This area of Bryans Road between Pomonkey Creek and Indian Head Highway is where most of the rental properties can be found. You can choose from 1960s split-levels and ramblers, as well as brand new luxury developments. This part of Bryans Road is also where most of the stores are located.

South: Below Indian Head Highway is another fairly unpopulated area. Besides farmhouses, the area also offers ranchers from late 1950s and new developments with contemporary style houses. This is also where you'll find Sartiks, Bryan Road's spot for music, dancing and cocktails.

North: Above Pomonkey Creek and Mill Swamp, the northern area of town is the least densely populated part of Bryans Road. It's mostly woodlands, but you can find places to live in the single-family home developments on the shores of the Potomac River. These homes have the largest lots in town, and often feature docks, boat ramps and pools.

Life in Bryans Road

As small towns go, Bryans Road is fairly self-sufficient. It has grocery stores, car care, fast food joints and other essentials in and around the juncture of Indian Head Highway and Route 227, which is called Marshall Hall or Livingston Road, depending on which side of the intersection you're on. Residents who want more than drive-thru fare can go to Doc's Crabs for some seafood, Mama Stella's Ristorante Italiano for a hearty plate of spaghetti, or Chuck's Butcher Shop for a cut of buffalo, elk or even muskrat, if that's your thing. Nature lovers can spend their time hiking in Piscataway Park in the northern part of town or exploring in the muck of Mill Swamp. And of course, everything Washington DC has to offer is only a 30 minute drive away.
