City Guide for Northampton, MA

Want to know what all the Northampton buzz is about? Well, you’ve found the right place. We've got all the information you need to know about this Renaissance town, as well as a great collection of renting tips and personalize-able listings to help you find the perfect new home.

If you’re looking for a small-town feel with all the counterculture fun of old San Francisco, then you’ve stumbled upon the perfect little city. Northampton, or NoHo, is a freakin' awesome place to call home. There is plenty of fun goings-on around here. Northampton's quaint downtown is full of eclectic shops, art, and music. There is a system of greenways, parks, and rail-trails that allow locals to hike and bike to just about anywhere. And, there's plenty of river-rat fun to be had on the Connecticut River. No matter where you go, there are beautifully artistic things happening. You can catch mandolin pickers practicing along the river, street musicians and artists entertaining the downtown crowd, as well as live music at a number of local venues.

So, how much does all this fun cost? With rental properties ranging from $1,000 to $2,000, it's not exactly cheap living around here. The closest thing you can find to a cheap apartment is a $1,000 studio. There are plenty of apartments for rent with large floor plans, as well as some charming rental homes.

If you are a renter that has grown used to convenient amenities, moving to NoHo will be a quite the dramatic change. Around here, apartments are housed in small buildings and converted old houses, leaving little room for the usual amenities, such as laundry facilities and swimming pools. However, what’s lacking in amenities is more than made up for in culture, aesthetics, and good ol' artistic fun.

The rest of NoHo life can only be understood by living here. So, you better get to it! Best of luck!

What to keep in mind when looking for apartments with parking in Northampton, MA

Parking can be at a premium in some cities where spaces are challenging to find. Some Northampton apartments offer parking options, either outside in a common area or within a private garage.

Ask about the stipulations around the parking. Those may include how many guests are allowed and where tenants park.

Some apartments may only allow parking in front of your own unit. Guest parking may be in a common area for up to one person.

If parking is scarce, look around the area before you sign a lease. Ample street parking in a neighborhood championed for its safety is probably fine. However, it’s probably not worth signing a lease if it means battling for daily parking for you and your guests.

Research whether you need a city permit to park in the neighborhood. Look into the associated costs and what to do about visitors who need parking.

Some tenants prefer garage parking near their units. However, an open-air lot may prove cheaper.

Keep in mind that the cost of wear and tear from parking outside can add up. It may be less expensive, in the long run, to look for an apartment with garage parking.
