Portland is home to the Portland Rockets baseball team. Founded in 1959, they're one of the nation's longest running amateur baseball teams.
With a population of 6,223, Portland couldn't be called a bustling city. However, as the county seat of Jay County, it is one of the larger towns in the area and has everything you need right on the doorstep. You might not be able to see a Picasso painting or get pizza delivered at 2 a.m., but what you do get is a great sense of community and a laid back way of life.
Moving to Portland
Looking for rental houses in Portland shouldn't be too much of a bother. It could take around six weeks to find the home of your dreams, so it's best not to leave things to the last minute. After all, you probably don't want to be forced to move into a house currently occupied by a family of raccoons, just because it's the only place available. The cost of your move will depend on a number of variables, but generally you'll have to pay a month's worth of rent upfront, plus a deposit. Of course, this means that it will cost more to move into five-bedroom houses than it would to move into one-bedroom apartments.
Neighborhoods in Portland
The city of Portland doesn't cover a huge area of land -- a little over 4.5 square miles -- but there's still a fair amount of difference between the neighborhoods. Be sure to do your research before making a move to your new apartment or house rental, so you're certain you're moving to an area that suits you.
College Corner: This area is a little way out from the center, but still convenient for some shops and eateries and is close to the town's hospital. It's close to the municipal airport, so expect some extra noise.
City Center: Living in the center of town means you'll be close to most of Portland's amenities. There's many an apartment complex in this neighborhood, and also some gorgeous historic residences.
Green Park: As the name suggests, Green Park has plenty of open space. This neighborhood has a rural feeling and is where you'll find many of the town's larger homes.
Living in Portland
While you might not find much in the way of action and excitement in Portland, the town's got everything you need to get by. You can do your grocery shopping at one of several supermarkets in the town, such as Circle K or the Village Pantry. Try for a perfect game or simply try not to roll too many gutter balls at The Brown Bowl. The Ritz Theatre on North Meridian Street may be the only place to see a movie in town, but it always shows a good selection of the latest Hollywood hits. There are eight city parks in Portland, containing a variety of recreational facilities, plus there's a public swimming pool that's open during the warmer months. You can grab a bite at one of many local eateries, such as Dick's Pizza Place or Margaritas Mexican Grill. You'll find a number of local events held in Portland throughout the year, including the Jay County Heritage Festival and the Jay County Fair.
