City Guide for Crawfordsville, IN

Welcome to Crawfordsville! Your new Indiana city is about as small town as you can get. Let’s take a look at the local apartment-hunting scene.

Crawfordsville is located in the central Indiana, about 30 miles south of Lafayette and 45 miles northeast of Indiana.

As a small town with a population of a little less than 16,000 people, Crawfordsville isn’t the most hip and happening spot. As a result, the proximity to larger city amenities might become a lifeline. Though there are a few conveniences and amenities in the form of chain stores, restaurants, and quaint small town entertainment venues like arcades and bowling alleys, there isn’t much else to do around town.

For your safety, you need to be aware of the Crawfordsville Monster, a spooky cloud with red glowing eyes last seen in the late 19th century. Though certain non-believers claim that the cloud was a cluster of birds huddled around one of those new fangled electric streetlights, I suggest erring on the side of caution. Watch Lost, or something, to prepare.

Crawfordsville’s best assets are its low cost of living and fairly decent safety rating (monster not with standing). Because of these traits, you’ll be sure to find tons of cheap apartments through many of the safest, most desirable neighborhoods in town.

Just south of the city center you’ll find a high concentration of apartment rentals with varied reputations. Many of these complexes offer everything from studio apartments to three bedroom apartments for rent. Two bedroom apartments in this area generally range from $450 to $600.

West of the city center you’ll find the campus of Wabash College, a well regarded all men’s school that provides the city with some youth, not to mention testosterone. In this scenic and safe area, you’ll find a variety of rentals, many of which offer short-term leases. Two bedrooms here range from $500 to $650.

Living north of the city center will put you in closer proximity to Lafayette, which as I mentioned, will be a huge advantage for you. The neighborhoods in this area tend to be more settled, family-friendly and suburban feeling. Here you’ll find the occasional newer, “luxury” apartment complex with amenities like gyms, pools and clubhouses. There will also be a few great rental homes in this area. Two bedroom apartments here generally range from $600 to $800, while rental homes go for $500 to $800, depending on the size.

Good news for animal lovers! Crawfordsville’s rental market is incredibly pet friendly. Though some management companies may require an additional pet deposit, or have size or breed restrictions, most area apartments are both cat and dog friendly.

So welcome to Crawfordsville! Enjoy all that is this small, conveniently located city has to offer! See more

What to keep in mind when looking for apartments with parking in Crawfordsville, IN

Parking can be at a premium in some cities where spaces are challenging to find. Some Crawfordsville apartments offer parking options, either outside in a common area or within a private garage.

Ask about the stipulations around the parking. Those may include how many guests are allowed and where tenants park.

Some apartments may only allow parking in front of your own unit. Guest parking may be in a common area for up to one person.

If parking is scarce, look around the area before you sign a lease. Ample street parking in a neighborhood championed for its safety is probably fine. However, it’s probably not worth signing a lease if it means battling for daily parking for you and your guests.

Research whether you need a city permit to park in the neighborhood. Look into the associated costs and what to do about visitors who need parking.

Some tenants prefer garage parking near their units. However, an open-air lot may prove cheaper.

Keep in mind that the cost of wear and tear from parking outside can add up. It may be less expensive, in the long run, to look for an apartment with garage parking.
