With a population of about 11,560, Cedar Lake is considered a medium-sized town. It spans a little over nine square miles with over one mile of that in the form of water. W. 109th Avenue / Cline Avenue: You'll find homes, rental apartments, and high-rise apartments here. The WalkScore is between five and nine, so gas up the hoopty.

Town Center: If there's an expensive part of town, this is it. The area offers a variety of rental types and decent vacancy rates. You might even land a condo for rent here. Town Center's WalkScore is five, so don't expect to get around much on foot.

Morse Street / W. 141st Avenue: This part of town also features a decent variety of rental options. It's more expensive than most Indiana communities, but still more affordable than many places across the country. You need a car here, as the area's WalkScore is only nine, which is a little better than the five of Town Center, but still -- get some wheels and make your life easier.

Life in Cedar Lake

Once you've made yourself at home here, head out to the lake. The lake consists of close to 800 acres of water and thousands of feet of shoreline on which you'll find picnic tables and plenty of untouched space on which to play Frisbee. There's also 18 acres of park land. Lakeside recreation not your thing? Don't worry. You'll also find the Lake of the Red Cedars Museum, the annual Cedar Lake Summerfest, and plenty of shopping and restaurants to keep you busy.
