City Guide for Steger, IL

Steger, Illinois is home to newspaper columnist and U.S Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson.

Steger is a village located on the border between Cook County and Will County in Illinois with a population of 9,570. It's a little over an hour outside of downtown Chicago, and a lot of people love being so close to the city (but not being right in the middle of the action). The city began in 1893 when John Valentine Steger opened a piano factory alongside the railroad. The company eventually led to the town becoming "the piano capital of the world," because it was producing more than 100 pianos per day! The town continued to grow and started to blend into the rest of Cook County and the neighboring Chicago suburbs. The town has two beautiful parks that are popular with local residents -- Harold Hecht Park and Veterans' Park. See more

What to keep in mind when looking for dog friendly apartments in Steger, IL

Finding an apartment in Steger that accepts your pet may not be easy, but it’s very possible. Keep in mind, most of the time you’ll have to pay a premium for bringing your dog along in your new apartment. Some apartments require you to pay monthly pet rent, others will ask for a non-refundable pet fee or a refundable pet deposit.

While landlords and property management companies have varying pet policies, most of them limit the number of dogs you can bring to your apartment and include breed and weight restrictions.

If your pet falls under some of the restrictions outlined in the pet policy, it’s still worth asking the landlord if they can make an exception for your dog. Preparing a pet resume ahead of time could help you build the case for your furry friend. Make sure to include information on behavioral training your dog went through over the years and proof of vaccinations. If you can, include references from your former landlord and/or neighbors.
