Mattoon is located in the eastern central portion of the state, about 45 miles from Decatur and 55 miles from Champaign. The city is part of the Charleston-Mattoon Micropolitan Statistical Area and has a population of a little over 18,000.
Like many Midwestern cities, Mattoon’s economy was based largely on the railroad and manufacturing industries. During the middle of the 20th century, many of Mattoon’s factories closed up shop and business was sent to foreign countries. Because of this reduction in employment opportunities, Mattoon development has become a bit suspended in recent years.
Never fear! Nearby Charleston, which is home to Eastern Illinois University, has kept the two cities afloat for a while. EIU, which educates about 11,000 students annually, has made both Charleston and Mattoon livelier with cultural and academic engagements, as well as entertainment, restaurants, and bars.
