Island Lake has some of the most expensive properties in Illinois, although they aren't the most expensive in the country by a fair margin. Rental houses cost about the same throughout the village, and the prices are moderate for 1 and 2 bedroom houses, duplexes for rent or studio apartments for rent. For your money, it's better to go for a larger apartment or even a 2 bedroom house versus a 1 bedroom house, because the differences in price are so slim. Go for the bigger yard!

You'll have to contact the Village of Island Lake to have your water, sewage, trash, and recycling accounts set up. Island Lake has a recycling program that includes yard waste collection during peak seasons. Ask the administrators for advice on whom to contact for cable and internet services, as well as power and gas.

Island Lake Neighborhoods

Technically speaking, Island Lake is a whole community unto itself -- it's just a bit too small to break down any further. The northern section is sparsely houses, with a few little lakes scattered around for good measure. To the south lies the Cotton Creek Marsh Nature Reserve, and the impressive Slocum Lake. At the center of town we have the famed Island Lake, in which there is indeed a small island! Housing and businesses are spread out to the east and west of the lake, which makes for a vast green space in the center of town.

What Else Is Cool About Island Lake?

Firstly, admit it, you know you want to swim out to the island in the lake. That's a given. When you're done with that, you can sign up for dancing lessons, visit Buck Wild Tavern, take a weekend outing to Slocum Lake, or go biking through the Nature Reserve. Getting hungry? Check this place out: Kief's Reef, all you can eat crab legs. Or hit up the Carlos River Cafe for some authentic Mexican food; locals love the tacos. Culver's has fresh custard and freshly fried chicken, while Top Notch Pizza and Sandwiches really speaks for itself. Come on down! The air is fresh and so is the custard.
