Johnston is in the Des Moines metropolitan area, located just six miles northwest of the city and about 120 miles east of Omaha, Nebraska. Although Johnston was established as a city in 1905, it wasn’t incorporated until 1969. There wasn’t much in Johnston in 1969 and it was mostly just a little agricultural town. But since 1980, the population has doubled every ten years. In 2011, _Money _magazine ranked Johnston the 13th best place to live. As the home of the Camp Dodge military base, the Pioneer Hi-Bred seed company and Iowa Public Television, it’s easy to see why this once small town is quickly becoming one of the most popular suburbs of Des Moines.
Moving to Johnston
The advantage of moving to a fast growing town like Johnston means that you're less likely to have to live in a dump, no matter your budget. The vast majority of the available apartments and houses for rent are in fairly new and nice condition. Compared to other housing markets in the country – particularly on both the east and west coast – Johnston is inexpensive. However, Johnston is definitely upscale and affluent compared to the other suburbs of Des Moines.
Like most cities, apartments for rent in Des Moines will have some standards that make a difference in how quickly and easily you can find a home. Ideally you should have a monthly income that is two to three times greater than your monthly rent. It also helps if you have good references from previous landlords and if you have a stable job history. You may also want to enlist the help of an apartment locator if you need help finding the right place. Apartment locators have a lot of knowledge about the apartments in your area and can save you the time and hassle of driving around to look at potential places by narrowing down the search to ones that meet your criteria.
