City Guide for Johnston, IA

The oldest person in the entire world lived in Johnston, Iowa. Dina Manfredini was born in 1898, and lived in Johnston until she died in December 2012 at the age of 114.

Johnston is in the Des Moines metropolitan area, located just six miles northwest of the city and about 120 miles east of Omaha, Nebraska.  Although Johnston was established as a city in 1905, it wasn’t incorporated until 1969. There wasn’t much in Johnston in 1969 and it was mostly just a little agricultural town. But since 1980, the population has doubled every ten years. In 2011, _Money _magazine ranked Johnston the 13th best place to live.  As the home of the Camp Dodge military base, the Pioneer Hi-Bred seed company and Iowa Public Television, it’s easy to see why this once small town is quickly becoming one of the most popular suburbs of Des Moines. What to keep in mind when looking for dog friendly apartments in Johnston, IA

Finding an apartment in Johnston that accepts your pet may not be easy, but it’s very possible. Keep in mind, most of the time you’ll have to pay a premium for bringing your dog along in your new apartment. Some apartments require you to pay monthly pet rent, others will ask for a non-refundable pet fee or a refundable pet deposit.

While landlords and property management companies have varying pet policies, most of them limit the number of dogs you can bring to your apartment and include breed and weight restrictions.

If your pet falls under some of the restrictions outlined in the pet policy, it’s still worth asking the landlord if they can make an exception for your dog. Preparing a pet resume ahead of time could help you build the case for your furry friend. Make sure to include information on behavioral training your dog went through over the years and proof of vaccinations. If you can, include references from your former landlord and/or neighbors.
