The building
This exclusive, small-scale condo building has an extensive history. It was constructed in 1911-12 and designed by Albert Pissis, who also designed the Flood Building and Emporium building (now the Westfield Shopping Center). It was originally intended as a hotel and lodging house, and after serving a variety of other purposes, it was home to the world-famous Ernies restaurant between 1942 and 1996. Alfred Hitchcock filmed the movie "Vertigo" here in 1958.

The neighborhood
Jackson Square was known as the Barbary Coast in the 1870s and was home to commercial and retail establishments, saloons, and a wild "nightlife."
