City Guide
Sweet Auburn, Atlanta
Across the highway (I-85) from Downtown Atlanta lies Sweet Auburn, a neighborhood district that is home to some of Atlanta’s most historically significant sites. The area originally began and thrived in response to an increasing need for black-run businesses and organizations because of issues of segregation; this community spirit of determination and desire to build/improve is just as strong today. Recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of America’s Most Endangered Historic Places in 1992, Sweet Auburn is in the process of trying to rebuild and repurpose itself to its former standard of glory.

There are many places of interest in the area for exploring and learning more about our nation’s past. Auburn Avenue, once known as one of the richest streets in the world, splits Sweet Auburn in half and is where many of the neighborhood’s historical components can be found. The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site has many of its buildings on or near the actual avenue. The APEX (African American Panoramic Experience) Museum is also located on Auburn Avenue, as is the Wheat Street Baptist Church, which played a role in the Civil Rights Movement. This street possesses a lot of significance and is a great location for experiencing with friends and family.

Sweet Auburn doesn’t just preserve the historic; it makes good use of it too. The Atlanta Daily World Building, which once served as home to the country’s first black-run daily newspaper, has been developed and repurposed into apartments and retail space. Other repurposed buildings like the Studioplex offer stylish loft apartments that are close to retail and public transportation options too. The Royal Peacock (originally named the Top Hat Night Club), founded in the 1920’s, continues as a popular spot for nightlife today.

Every year the neighborhood hosts the Sweet Auburn Springfest, one of the largest outdoor festivals in the southeast. The festival is family-friendly, with all the things one might expect of a springfest (live music on multiple stages, tons of food and shopping) plus a “Fantastic Fun Zone,” which offers rides and games as entertainment for the kiddos. The Sweet Auburn Music Fest is another annual neighborhood festival: two straight days of music, food, local vendors, and family-friendly activities.

Another great spot in this neighborhood is the Sweet Auburn Curb Market. Ranked as the 16th best food market in the world by USA Today in 2013, its offerings range from crepes to double-crust pies to classic barbeque to pop-up venders, and more. Begun in 1918 on land cleared by the Great Atlanta fire of 1917, it’s a great place to come with family and friends to get a taste of the neighborhood and some of its more recent history.

Past concerns about Sweet Auburn have included its proximity to Boulevard, another well-known street in Atlanta. However, new developments on and near the street are improving its reputation, breathing new life into the area and adding a modern element. The median age in Sweet Auburn is 34 years. The number of households that don’t have children far outweighs the number of households that do, though there are many family-friendly events and activities in the area. And with new developments popping up in other parts of the neighborhood, housing options are increasing, making Sweet Auburn a great choice for finding your home!
