City GuideUptown
Known as Denver’s oldest residential neighborhood, Uptown is full of restaurants, places to hang out, and tons of places to live. From classic Victorian apartment buildings to modern housing units, there are places to live for everyone in this great area. There are even a few houses in the mix.
Life in Uptown

Situated just up the slope from Downtown, this is also one of the most convenient places to live in terms of location. Simply walk out your door and you’re not only steps from neighborhood bars and restaurants, you are also well within walking distance of downtown. Go to work on 17th or shopping on the 16th Street Mall in minutes. Even hip South Broadway and the nightlife of LODO (Lower Denver) are only a short walk (or even shorter bike ride) away.

There are all kinds of dining in uptown, from casual to chic. For fine dining, check out Avenue Grill on 17th and Washington. They have white table cloths, a fancy menu, servers in black and white, the whole bit. Right across the street is Hamburger Mary’s, a fun and campy bar and burger joint with an outdoor patio that keeps the neighborhood smelling like burgers all Spring and Summer long. There are also a few really great hidden gems of coffee shops, like Fluid Coffee Bar on 19th and Pearl. It’s a great place to grab a latte or a snack, and they even have a meeting room that can be rented out for private presentations. If you’re after a good dispensary, iVita is located in Uptown, on 17th and Pearl. They offer recreational as well as medicinal cannabis, and they have great prices.

As far as nightlife goes, you have easy access to all the clubs in Lower Denver, including the famed Club Beta, which has won international awards. If you are looking for something a bit more low-key with a neighborhood feel, try the aforementioned Hamburger Mary’s. There’s also the popular and hip Steuben’s, with delicious food and drinks, and Ace: Eat Serve next door, where you can play Ping-Pong while you wait for your food to be served. Uptown is also very conveniently located when it comes to grocery shopping. Safeway is right across Park off of 22nd, nestled between the San Rafael/City Park West neighborhood and Uptown. King Supers is also a short walk along Downing to 9th in Capitol Hill. If you are looking for something a little healthier, Natural Grocers - run by the people who brought us The Vitamin Cottage - just opened off of Washington on Colfax. This store has it all, from deliciously fresh and organic produce to bison meat and green tea in a can.

One of the best things about the Uptown neighborhood is its proximity to other great Denver neighborhoods with lots to do. In addition to Downtown, you are just a few short blocks from Five Points, San Rafael/City Park West, and Capitol Hill. Five Points has some lively nightclubs and great restaurants, and they host the family-friendly Five Points Jazz Festival every Summer. A casual stroll through City Park West will lead you to the west edge of the park itself, as well as the famed Denver Zoo and Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Capitol Hill is chock full of bars, restaurants, and shopping, as well as the beautiful Cheesman Park. Check out the famed coffee shop City O’ City, and right next door is a branch of the vintage clothing shop Buffalo Exchange, and the awesome local bookstore Kilgore Trout.

No matter what you are looking for as far as housing, you can find it in Uptown. There are studios, apartments with one or two or three bedrooms, full houses, split-levels, condos, townhomes and more. If a yard, terrace, or balcony is a priority, you can find all that, too. Most apartment buildings have their own garages or parking lots, so finding parking in the city won’t be an issue. You’ll also be just blocks away from the lightrail on 25th and Welton in Five Points, as well as the one on the 16th Street Mall. As far as taking the bus, that’s even easier! There are stops all along 17th and Colfax, which run right through Uptown. And there are dogs all over this ‘hood, so you can certainly find a place for your furry friend.

Speaking of dogs, there’s also a great dog park down Washington a little past the Safeway, where the streets split up at 23rd. It’s a small, sandy lot behind an apartment building where pups from Five Points, City Park, and Uptown all come to play. Dog owners will find plenty of friendly people to chat with on any given day, and their pups will make lots of new friends, too! They also keep the park well-stocked with bags and there’s a water pump to water your dog, so you don’t need to come packing tons of supplies.

All in all, Uptown is a great place to live, regardless of what you are looking for in your home or surroundings. It’s close to downtown with the tons of restaurants, yet this is still very much a community-centered and residential neighborhood, with tons of awesome housing options to choose from. If you’re looking for convenience, comfort, excitement, and a neighborhood where you don’t have to jump in the car every time you want to go somewhere, Uptown might well be the perfect neighborhood for you.
