Woodland is technically a suburb of Sacramento. Located in Yolo County in the northwest portion of California, the city was founded in 1850, and it has continued to grow ever since. City experts credit the growth of Woodland to the fact that it was well-irrigated off the bat, and it also had fertile soil and was accessible by railroad and Interstate 5. Many people move to Woodland, though, just because the cost of living is lower than in Sacramento. It being a nice, sunny, quiet place to live doesn't hurt much either. Woodland is a lot like any suburban town youd imagine. It has quiet, upscale subdivisions, lots of chain stores, and relatively good public schools. It has four seasons like anywhere else, but the weather stays mild all year round. Want something to do? Silly question... of course you do. Woodland provides easy access to big city entertainment in Sacramento. Rather test your resilience the old fashioned way? Good, because there is outdoor adventuring in the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains and the splendor of the nearby Pacific northwest.

Moving to Woodland

If you are looking to the Sacramento area or want a Californian City that lacks the pretension of Southern California and big city prices of San Francisco, Woodland could be just the right place for you. Woodland has a good mix of rental apartments and homes and even great places to purchase if you're ready to shell out some moolah. Still, if youre looking for a more temporary residence where you can pay from month to month, theres a good chance youll be able to find one here. Only 5% of the houses are vacant, but get a real estate broker to help you look and theres a good chance something in your price range and desired size will open up within a year. This alone should tell you that prices aren't cheap, but honestly, you'll get way you pay for. If, however, youre looking for something more affordable than in Sacramento proper, the town is a good choice. Studio apartments are available for less than $1,000 per month, so if youre looking to live alone, it wont be impossible for you to pay your rent. Besides, being alone here is fine after leaving your heart in San Francisco. That's a song... get cultured. You'll need it in Woodland.

When you move to Woodland and begin your apartment search, be sure that you come prepared. Youll need to bring several documents with you in order to submit an application for an apartment you like right away; its important to act fast, because otherwise, an apartment you like could be snatched up before you have time to lay claim to it. Be sure to bring your ID, tax returns, credit history, proof of employment, former landlord references, bank statements, and anything else your specific broker might need. Yeah, seems like a lot, but a responsible adult would have those! Also, its important to have your bank account fully loaded when youre looking for an apartment. Youll most likely need to provide at least 2 months rent upfront. On top of that, youll have to provide an extra security deposit. No, this doesn't cover security guards... well.... it might.

Neighborhoods

No matter where you move in Woodland, youre likely to get something similar; in terms of neighborhood feel, anyway. The town is really suburban, and the whole area is pretty safe and friendly. Some areas are more bustling than others, with commercial properties, shops and restaurants. If you're not into the club and finding love scene, other neighborhoods are strictly residential, with single family homes or apartment complexes to rent in. City Center:City Center is the hip and trendy central part of Woodland. Everything is a short walk from here, so if you want to get from place to place, you wont need your own set of wheels. City Center is where you come to shop or eat and fewer people live here than in other parts of Woodland. But its a good mix of renters and buyers, and there are both younger and older people here so no matter who you are, chances are youll probably find someone to fit in with. $$

Conaway:This is the area of Woodland that comprises all 4 of its outer edges. It is really quiet here, and almost only residential. You can find a mix of housing, like single-family homes and townhouses and even mobile homes. But most people here live in a home they own as opposed to rent. If you live here, youll want to have a car and some friends or family, because you wont have much opportunity to mix and mingle with the people living around you in communal settings. $$$$$

E Street/Main Street:On the edge of city center, there is more happening here than in most suburban or residential areas of Woodland (though, not much). You can walk around, but youll want to have a car to reach places like grocery stores. This is one of the older neighborhoods in the area, so lots of people live in historic homes. Come on... who wouldn't want to live amongst history? There are also apartment buildings here, so if you want to rent, you can likely find a great place. $$$$

Living in Woodland

If you live in Woodland, chances are youre probably going to be traveling into Sacramento a good deal. Because, lets face it: theres not too much actually going on in the small town. Most people in Woodland are here just to rest their head between trips to the bigger nearby city. If you are one of the folks that needs or wants to get into and out of Sacramento on a regular basis, there is a bus system that will help. Residents here have affectionately named the system "YOLOBUS," and if you get on it, it will take you into and out of Sacramento and Davis Creek (among other nearby areas). Do you really always want to take a bus, though? Having your own car is always more reliable than a bus (if you have a decent car, anyway), and you can take longer trips to a much wider variety of areas if you have one. People do still travel on foot in Woodland, though; and also by bike. After all, it is California and people are very focused on health and fitness.

If you plan on moving to Woodland and want to spend time in the town that you actually live in, you wont be completely bored since the city has a good selection of dining and entertainment options to keep you fed and busy. On top of that, there are a good smattering of festivals and events year round. A favorite event with Woodland residents is the Stroll Through History. Each year, the city hosts guided walking tours around historic areas in the town to educate people more about the history and culture of their hometown. There is also Yolo County Fair each year held in Woodland. Its the largest free fair in the state of California and has just what youd imagine at a fair: rides, shows, food, and even a demolition derby. Woodland is also a proud host to an annual Sacramento Valley Scottish Games and Festival. Luck of the Scottish! Or is that Irish? Finally, Woodland is home to an annual Christmas Parade which draws a crowd of about 30,000 people and has marching bands, dancers, singers and more.

If you're looking for more permanent fun, there are lots of museums to keep both tourists and residents entertained. The Heidrick Ag History Center is a museum focused on farming and agriculture. Yeah, this sounds boring, but it will definitely surprise you. You can learn about old farming equipment and developing harvest technology here. The town is also home to a historical museum about the original settlers and culture of the area. Woodland residents are proud of their home and their history, and at the Yolo County Historical Museum, you can check out a historic home in the area restored to its original splendor. Its full of furniture, art and artifacts from daily life representing how settlers in the area originally lived. For arts lovers, Woodland has the Woodland Opera House a beautiful old opera house restored to its original beauty and now boasting several operas and shows throughout the year.
