City Guide for Signal Hill, CA

Before urbanization blocked sight lines with walls, roof lines, towers and palm trees, you could actually clearly see the hill that gives the city part of its name. As for the other part, long ago signal fires were lit on this hill that could be seen even from Catalina Island.

After it became part of a ranch, Signal Hill was supposed to be a tiny enclave heralded by a few mansions. But in 1917, oil wells sprouted across the landscape, making the city one of the most productive oil fields in the country. Only a few of the gushers remain. In their place rose houses, offices and parks -- maybe more green space than you expect to find in just 2.2 square miles. Fortunately, the 11,465 residents (per 2010 census) are okay with all those trees and fields. See more

What to keep in mind when looking for apartments with balconies in Signal Hill, CA

Balconies are a coveted amenity for many renters looking for high-rise views and opportunities for fresh air. However, you should keep in mind that balconies often come with restrictions.

Before signing a lease, ask about how many people can be on the balcony at once. Also, ask about whether you’re allowed to store a bike or other items.

You’ll also want to know about any maintenance schedules. Using your balcony as storage could result in fines and intervention from your property management.

Keep in mind that not all balconies are created equally. You may discover the views of the parking area are less than optimal or reduce your overall privacy.

Balconies can also get messy with debris, foliage, dirt, and pollen depending on your location. Renters are typically responsible for any clean-up and basic balcony upkeep.

Regardless of the issues to keep in mind, balconies are usually a big win for Signal Hill renters. Ask about apartments on higher floors for the best views.
