Renting in Serra Mesa, San Diego

You’ll have plenty of options when you’re ready to rent an apartment in Serra Mesa. There’s a wide range of prices and styles, so depending on your preference (and budget) you can rent a brand new luxury 1-bedroom apartment or an older single-family home for the same monthly rent. Some of the newer complexes were built with commuters in mind and are located right at the 805/163 interchange. The apartments in northwestern Serra Mesa are also close to Sharp Memorial Hospital and Rady Children’s Hospital, making them a popular choice for employees of the hospitals and surrounding medical offices. For UCSD students, living near the 805 means you can be on campus in under 15 minutes. On the southern end of Serra Mesa, football fans can rent an apartment that’s walking distance to Qualcomm Stadium for Chargers home games. Living off of Mission Village Drive offers easy access to not only the stadium, but also Fenton Marketplace shopping (IKEA, Costco, and Lowe’s), I-15, and I-8. SDSU students in this part of Serra Mesa can make their campus commute in about 10 minutes.

Things to do in Serra Mesa

There’s a Ralph’s, Costco, IKEA, and dozens of smaller retailers in the shopping centers along Friars Road. Serra Mesa nature lovers can take advantage of the abundance of natural beauty that’s perfect for hikers, bikers, and families. The Ruffin Canyon Open Space trails are primitive, but are being maintained and improved by the Friends of Ruffin Canyon. The Ruffin Canyon area spans most of Serra Mesa, but the trails can be accessed from Taft Middle School. You’ll find more modern trails just south of Serra Mesa on the San Diego River Trail system. The trail still has some gaps but there are completed segments from Ocean Beach to the Mission Valley YMCA and then from Riverwalk Golf Club to the 805.

Part of what makes Serra Mesa such a great place to rent is the strong sense of community pride here. The volunteer-run Serra Mesa Community Council works to improve the neighborhood and keep residents happy.
