The house was designed so that thermal energy from the sun is trapped and stored in the winter and the ground pulls the heat out of the house during the summer. All rooms have South-facing windows. In the summertime, the sun is directly overhead and does not shine directly into the house. All the masonry soaks up coolness from the ground and makes the house feel considerably cooler than the outside. Ideally, the windows should be opened in the evening and closed in the mid-morning. This allows the house to cool off from the heat of the day, and the masonry will trap that coolness and release it into the house during the next day.

In the wintertime, the sun is lower to the South. The sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.4 degrees in December. In the winter the sun shines into every window and heats up the masonry. The masonry (walls and floor) radiates the heat during the night, keeping the house warmer. There is a shade structure with a movable shade cloth on the South. This structure helps shade the windows in warm weather and can be moved to allow the sun to shine in during cooler weather.

Additionally, it has installed 5 New mini-split air conditioners and thermal heat pumps. This is currently the most efficient heating and cooling system you can buy. The units can each be operated independently with remote control and deliver air comfort only to rooms where/when needed.
